that is the key. I've had mine now for 6 years with no cheating on my diet except for sundays and holidays. I work out six days a week with 5 days of weights 4 days of 30-50minutes of cardio, and 2 -3 days of ab training just to get them strong. But in order for them to show you must shed the layer of fat around them with diet. As for how long it will take that will depend on your genetics and your metabolism, and how hard you train. If you do the above 110% every time you are in the gym and at home with your diet you should see some results in 2 - 3 months, but don't expect miracles, especially if you are obese.

I use the ab lounge and it helped me some...
the best way would probably be to go to the gym and do all the weight lifting and stuff there, you wouldn't want to have huge abs and small arms lol

Weighted sit-ups usually work. Do sit-ups that target the different abs, like lower-body, and when you do upper abds, hold like a 45 weight, and really crunch. The other posters are right on the money about fat-free diet, and metabolism. If you are lean to begin with, the 6-pack will show better. Padded guys can get them to show, but the definition is not as good.
