First you need to gain weight by eating protein, high calori, rich foods, like:

The above movements performed properly will pack the mass on you (assuming you eat enough). Compound movements work so well because they are efficient and they allow the use of heavy loads. They are efficient because one movement hits a lot of muscle and the value of lifting big weights is self-evident.

When I was in college I threw discus on the track team. My coach wanted to pack some size on me cuz I was a bit too small for the sport.
I used a high protein amino compound made by Weider's (spelling ?)
Anyway, muscle needs protein to grow so take something like a Weider's muscle growth product to help you along. Combine it with weight resistance training and some regular exercise that gets your heart really pumping and you will certainly gain muscle mass. !Never take steroids!
If you are healthy enough, you need weight training. Start out with a cardio workout, perhaps a stationary bike WITH RESISTANCE for about 20 minutes. Concentrate on free weights, perhaps dumbbells, with slow, full range exercises. Develop your regimen with a personal trainer. Don't exclude your lower body and abs. Eat lean meats. Personally, I believe lean red meats are wonderful if you mix it up with chicken and turkey now and then. Eat eggs, 1% or skimmed milk, veggies like broccoli, spinach, and green beans. Use high calorie energy drinks prior to your workouts.
