I heard its a good idea to practice on a heavy bag with your bare knuckles. Do your hands and skin accomodate

Yes, they will toughen up, but the thing is your wrists and hand bones can break. Your wrists and hands are made up of a bunch of tiny little bones that are easy to break.

As for a solution, I think you should wrap them whenever you're using a heavy bag, or even training against other people. (Sparring)

The thing is, with a heavy bag you train for usually more than an hour, but a street fight will only last about 8 minutes of real fighting, if that.

Yes they do toughen up and get used to it but you practise less due to sore hands until they become tougher and the risk of breaking a bone or knuckle is greater.
But if for exercise use gloves bare fist-ed if you want to be a street fighter
Start out with them rapped.It will take the skin off your knuckles in just a few minutes,unrapped.And can cause infection from germs on bag.Most impotent is to rap your wrist most heavy bag physical damage is sprained or broken wrist's.
im not sure about everyone else, but i started punching with a heavy-*** punching bag. the inside texture was like rubber, and the outside is rough enough to skin you. at first, it made my knuckles numb and bleed for a while. but now, i can punch it as long as i want without getting hurt. by the way, make sure you make a tight fist and your thumb is wrapped around your pointer and middle finger, or else you may break your hand/fingers...
I wouldn't suggest it. Only because when I was in Martial Arts I never did get use to it. I kept breaking my knuckle open and they would bleed and not heal. I broke and dislocated several fingers in the process too. Not fun. I suggest using gloves.
