Size of the urinary bladder in "normal" adult male?
Question:
A number of years ago (when I was still being treated for bedwetting as a kid) I was encouraged to "check" the size of my bladder by waiting as long as I could to go to the bathroom and then urinating into a measuring cylinder to see how much it could hold. Well... out of curiosity I recently tried this again as an adult, and found that my bladder can hold about 12 ounces (350 mL) before the pressure is so strong I start wetting myself. Is this small for an adult male bladder? Could this really be the reason I have trouble holding it through the night? Serious answers appreciated!
Answers:
The typical bladder feels the urge to urinate at about 250-300mls. And the must go going to pee on myself at 500mls. You could have a small bladder but to be sure see a urologist.
I am a urology nurse for the past 15 years. an average bladder will have the "I think gotta pee sensation" when it has about 300 ml in it, the "I gotta pee dance" (this feeling is probably when you are at 350 ml) happens at about 500 ml.
YES, your bladder is probably a little small. . The small bladder is probably the reason that you can't hold it all night.
Here is a secret (that you have probably already tried for the night) don't drink anything for 3 to 4 hours before you go to bed. also, for the sake of your bedding, invest in diapers for night.
a new bladder can be made from a piece of you bowel, but, you will more than likely loose the "I need to pee" sensation all together..
good luck
