How long does an adult circumcision take, Is it painful, do you need an anasthetic? Help!!?

Question:
Im 25, and i think i have phimosis - am a bit worried about the procedure?

Answers:
I had the same thing.
The operation went on for about 30 minutes, I don't know why, but they were snipping little bits at a time.
You will have a local anasthetic. You have to remember, 'in the round' it leaves quite a big wound in a very sensitive area.
Then they got to put in stitches, so you gonna look a bit like Frankenstein for a while.
Mine wouldn't stop bleeding for an hour, so they made me sit in a cubicle and squeeze it until it did stop. That also hurt.

They won't let you go until it has stopped bleeding and you have passed water.

The pain afterwards wasn't too bad so long as you aren't moving about,(few days) but it is so strange not having a foreskin as the sensitive 'head' is in direct contact with your clothing. Don't worry the sensitivity will drop off and the 'glans' will toughen up a bit.
The stitches take a while to dissolve.
Don't try having sex (even with your hand) until the pain has completely gone and the skin has fully joined up again.
Book a week off work at least.
Masturbation was no problem after healing.
If there is a reduction in sensitivity it is only minute.
Girls like it because it is cleaner.

DO NOT GET AN INFECTION !
Well there is no doubt that it will be EXTREEMLY sore for a while after! Good luck though
Ive heard that they sit you in a chair and gather the foreskin in a piece of string and tie it to a door handle and the last person out of the room slams the door.
I think you should ask the professionals!
Erm..anaesthetic, you would try without it?! Crazy!
Why bother? keep what god gave us, unless it threatens our health.
You need a good moyle, snip and that's it. Much better then a doctor.
Nower days you get two rings, one around the foreskin and one inside, they clamp together and the foreskin drops off, when i got it done aged 4 (12 years ago) it was done with siccors.
Ask your doc for some advice regarding an alternative treatment before you make a decision. I think too many docs just give a lazy diagnosis. Save the foreskin!
I had that exact problem, boy do I feel sorry for you.

The actual circumcision itself only takes about 15 minutes. I was meant to have it done under a general anasthetic but my blood pressure at the time was far too high for the aneathstatist to take the risk. (cant think why it was so high.)
I ended up having it done under a local anasthetic.
Honestly, there was no real pain afterwards, just a dull ache. Be prepared for a bit of blood in your pants for a few days.
Take about a week off work and give yourself a chance to heal.
My Dad got circumcised as a youth because of a phimosa. He said it was sensitive for quite a while, because it was not used to coming into contact with clothes, but not especially painful.
You will need an local anasthetic, a pal of mine had it done and had to wear panty liners down his crotch for weeks afterwards as he was so sore.
I'm not sure how long the procedure takes, probably around half an hour or so. The actual procedure itself shouldn't be painful since they'll give you a local anesthetic to numb the area. Recovery afterwards might suck a lot, as the glans (penis head) will feel oversensitive as it rubs against things and erections can pull on the stitches. But that's what painkillers are for.

However, you should know that there are lots of other ways to treat and cure phimosis. The first thing you should try are called stretching exercises. See link 1 for good and detailed instructions on what to do. You should do those exercises for a few minutes each day for a few weeks to a month, preferably right after a shower/bath when the foreskin's most flexible.

If after a month and there's little/no progress, then ask a doctor about certain prescription creams that'll help loosen the foreskin. In one study, these creams are the most cost-effective treatment a doctor can provide (link 2, names of creams in one of the tables). Be aware that the cream(s) may take up a month or more to get the full effect, but you should be able to speed things up if you combine them with the stretching exercises.

In almost all cases of phimosis the above two treatments are all that's necessary. Very rarely will any kind of surgical intervention (i.e. circumcision) be needed. See links 3 and 4 for more info on phimosis. So if a circumcision isn't what you want, know that there are cheaper and less painful (if not painless) solutions.

Besides, if you can cure the phimosis without having your foreskin removed, there are good things about keeping your foreskin as long as it works (see remaining links). Good luck with whatever you decide.
The procedure takes about half an hour; you will be under general anaesthetic, and the water-soluble stitches will go in about 8 days.

The gits at my hospital sent in a stunning lady doctor to see me after my operation, and I had to keep myself under extreme control. Dr King was her name.

I was on the job with my g/f (wife 5 weeks later) within 7 days - still with stitches in.

The procedure worried my father - I told him whilst he was eating a sausage sandwich one lunch time that I needed the operation, and for the same reasons you do.
Some may say that circumcision will fix it, but circumcision's risks include reduction in sensitivity and pleasure, and making masturbation more difficult according to studies (including a few new ones from a few months ago). Oddly enough that's how it was promoted in the USA since masturbation was bad, haha. There's a reason why the USA is the last remaining advanced nation still doing it, and even so, it's getting a lot less popular (it's now as low as 14% in some states). Save that as a last resort, as you're doing. That's only one of the few risks, there's more listed here, in addition to the studies and statistics:

I was the same when I was younger, and now it slides fine with no problems whatsoever. Just pull back your foreskin when you shower the most you can without forcing it, and rub the head. That should encourage it to separate from the head. This is probably all you have to do, since this is common especially with teens. You just haven't 'used' it enough, as in masturbation and washing it. The same goes for sensitivity; the more your rub it the less sensitive it'll get (start using water when you shower then rub a little more each day).

And if its rather tight, you can get a cream that works in almost 95% of cases. It's 0.05% betamethasone or betamethasone dipropionate. And unlike circumcision it is very cheap ($12 in the USA), painless, and you don't risk decreasing sensitivity/pleasure and making masturbation more difficult. Here's the study that you can even print and give to the doctor:

Try that cream. It works. Doctors often just mention circumcision since its a surgery that brings a lot of money to them, especially in the USA.

If you have questions, e-mail me from my profile since I've gone through this. I'll be happy to answer any questions.
I'm 16 and I was about to have a circumcision, but I backed out. I didn't need one, my parents were pressuring me into doing it though just for the sake of conformity. Anyways, receiving the anesthetic is probably the most painful part of the procedure, and trust me, it isn't that painful. You will get local anesthetic through a series of injections at the base and into the skin of the penis. I only felt the doctor stick me with the needle 3 times, but he told me he's already stuck me several times. It will take about 10 minutes for your penis to become completely numb. After that though, I don't know what happens. The doctor told me the procedure is purely cosmetic as long as I keep myself clean. He asked if I was 100% set on getting the procedure done and only to agree to continue if I was; I wasn't. The doctor was glad I made that decision because I looked nervous to him and that in turn probably made him nervous to carry on the procedure. I walked out of the hospital with a numb penis and a disappointed dad, but he doesn't know the stress I went through up to that day; he was circumcised as a baby and didn't have a say in his situation.
Its a very simple operation and a good sleep afterwards you will be fine.Gentle excercise later and in 5 days good as new but bathe in warm not hot water it will be a little sore.Put your trust in the doc as you do in the Pilot on an aircraft. You will have an anesthetic and awaken in 30 min.Good luck and go for it.
I had the same problem as you and was circumcised 6 years ago aged 27. I don't recall the name of the surgeon. He was based in Harley Street but the operation was performed in Luton. I found him through this site: http://www.circumcisioncentre.co.uk/...

The operation lasts about 30 mins. The administration of the anaesthetic was actually quite painful as injections were given just below the glans.

Anaesthetic is necessary but local not general. That numbed it and I was conscious during the operation but chose not to look at what was going on.

The pain kicked in when the dressing was applied as it was tight (to prevent bruising) and the anti-septic felt like fire! I was ok to catch a train hope but rested thereafter.

The dressing stayed on for a week and wasn't at all very comfortable, you'll need some time off work to recuperate. Nocturnal erections hurt and I found cans of aerosol stayed cold enough to cool things down.

When the dressing was removed the discomfort subsided a lot and diminished as I started bathing it daily. The stiches fell out after a few days and I healed very quickly.

I had to go back to have the frenulum removed as it remained very tight after the circumcision but it was no bother at all.

I had all of the foreskin removed so that my glans are exposed when flaccid. This is known as a tight circumcision, but you could opt to have less foreskin removed: http://www.circlist.com/styles/style.htm...

Some posters have mentioned the decrease in sensitivity. This does occur, but not to the extent of some of the testimonies I have read. I think this must be due to drier climates than the damp weather we're used to in the UK or the fact that these guys are masturbating dry, which can only make the skin tougher. When lubricated the sensation is all there.

I've had no problems since being circumcised and much prefer being that way, as the tip of my foreskin used to suffer tiny lesions after sex which was painful thereafter.

Circumcision is not the only remedy for phimosis as some people have stated above you should think carefully and only opt for it if it's what you really want.
I had it done at 47 under general anaesthetic. It took about 45 minutes then woke up stitched with 27 fine stitches. Surprisingly very little pain. There were some sensitivity of the glans when rubbed in my pants but disappeared very soon. I recommend you take three days sick leave. No sex (including masturbation) for four weeks. Good luck. You took the right choice. Most physicians and their sons I know are circumcised. There must be a reason.
