How is sex after a prostatectomy?
Question:
Answers:
Different. It could improve or not at all.
DIFFICULT
I assume that it would be very difficult to have sex after having your prostate removed, but I am sure there are ways to keep your partner satisfied without an erect penis.
That depends on whether they were able to spare the nerves that control your erection.
If they managed to leave the nerves intact, sex will be similar to the way it was, except your ejaculation will be affected.
If the nerves were damaged or removed, you will be unable to have an erection normally. You can use a special cylinder inserted in the penis that can be inflated with fluid to give you an erection - this is often recommended after a total prostatectomy. If there is no nerve damage you shouldn't have a problem with erections. Your orgasms may even improve. The big difference you will notice is retroejaculation. (Ejaculation into the bladder rather than externally.)
The after effects of surgery of the prostate vary according to the surgical procedure that is chosen, the age of the patient, and other factors related to his general state of health. Studies have shown that about 6% of men who have had a TURP experience impotence, though there is no known physiologic cause for failure to have an erection post-operatively. The incidence is slightly higher in men who have the Suprapubic and Retropubic surgical approaches. This is something a man who needs the surgery really needs to discuss with his doctor to choose the best surgical approach and ask lots and lots of questions. Having a healthy and positive outlook before and after the surgery is half the battle and can go a long way. The best of luck to you.
