There are allot of answers.and from personal experience if you drink to much it becomes fat and also the body excretes it...and if you drink to little you got little results. I have discovered that the right amount is the best.each body has a way to process food.so just be atentive...the recipe for me is this..right before you work out you need fuel.some idiots think you need allot of carbs but it is wrong. What happens with the body when you do anything physical it starts pulling sugar from the body...and the body breaks down sugar from fat and protein of you existing muscles.so the logical answer is before workout...drink a protein shake 2 to 1 ratio...example 40 grams of protein 20 of carbs.and then after work out.reverse..THE BEST RESULT WILL BE IN THE MORNING...have your regular breakfast...but then get some pure protein on you to repair muscle.and also another pure dose...after lunch.dont go crazy on protein because it can harm your system...put everything on paper with your height and weight...and proportions...and please spread out you dosage...dont be like some dumb bodybuilders that you can see they have muscles but allot of fat around to. And there always with a GALLON OF SHAKE IN THERE HAND..GOOD LUCK
