There could be any number of either physical or psychological reasons. At his age it's unlikely to be a physical cause but not impossible. Could be he has a hang up he hasn't shared with you.

Vascular insufficiency due to any reason can cause it at any age. If it happens occasionally it is OK, may be cut down smoking. But if it is a frequent happening, he should visit his doc.
