Question:
Hi, I just got into bodybuilding a few months ago and I've only just now started using dumbbells. I understand that unlike barbells these actually make you use more stabilizer muscles than the ladder. However, i noticed a significant change in the amount of weight I could actually bench with the dumbbells. Is it normal for someone's bench to be cut in half when using dumbbells?
Answers:
Half might be a little on the drastic side, I have been working out with both barbells & dumbbells for the last 18 years and I am about 25% stronger with a barbell. I would imagine the drastic difference is, as you indicated, the fact that you just started using them and your stabilizer muscles are your weak point. Once you get your stabilizer muscles a bit stronger I imagine you will see less of a difference, but you will probably alwasy see a difference.
Not half. But there is a small reduction.
