Is there any financial help available for me ?
Question:
Answers:
Hey man, I was recently paralyzed in a car accident and I had to take 3 months off of work because of it. I did get short term and long term disability because I had signed up for those benefits with my employer at hire. However, like you, it wasn't enough to pay all the bills, so I turned to my state department of labor and they issued me disability benefits. That with my employer insurance matched my pre-injury income. Any questions, please feel free to write me or IM me.

You probably can qualify for welfare aid during that time food stamps, etc and maybe even cash assistance. If you don't have savings. Go to your local office or call them. Then you may call Social Security and see if you qualify for SSD or SSI. Your doctor should get you assistance for after surgery through your medical insurance. You may have to go to a rehab facility for a little while before you can go home, but it's less than the hospital. Talk to the social services director of the hospital where you will have your surgery. Be sure to tell your doctor often, you have NO help at home.
Does your health insurance allow you to receive home health care where a medical professional can check in on you once a day? I'm not so sure about the bills, except that I know if you call the people who you will owe in advance and explain the situation, most of them will work out a plan with you or offer advice. This way they won't end up charging you late fees, turning you over to a collection agency, putting bad marks on your credit, etc. My brother was in a tight spot recently and he borrowed money from his retirement fund. Sometimes this isn't the most feasible plan. You have to pay yourself back with interest, but if you just take money from your retirement (not a loan) you face huge penalties. There are also hardship loans, but I don't know much about them. Speak with your employer. Ask your surgeon and nurses, they can be helpful as well. Good luck!
You need to contact Social Services in your community and at the hospital where the surgery is to take place. Also, depending on the prospects for the outcome, Medicare or its state equivalent may be able to help.
