I think it's considered a sin to waste sperm in any fashion, such as masturbation, condoms, birth control, etc. And don't even think about abortion. But there must be a lot of Catholic sinners out there, since nowadays you don't see Catholics with huge numbers of kids like you see Mormons. Unless of course the Catholic religion only attracts people with low libidos.

This is a tricky question. It isn't just a Catholic thing- they just emphasize it the most.
I'll make this quick:
In the Old Testament, the Bible says "Thou shall not commit adultery". We've all heard this of course; it's a commandment.
In the New Testament, it goes on to say "But he who has looked upon a woman with lust has already commited adultery in his heart".
As one of the other answerers said, you can but you cannot fantasize about anyone while doing it. This is actually quite true. But needless to say, there is no point in masturbation if you do not have arousing images in your head.
In conclusion, masturbation is a sin. I do not believe it's because it's a waste of sperm. And believe me, I know it helps people, especially guys, not feel so much agony around certain women. It's just one of those things that requires patience, dedication, but most of all, prayer. I'm not saying that people who masturbate are going to hell. But it's just like any other sin and it all boils down to adultery. We may not understand completely why the Lord doesn't want us to lustfully think upon others, but He has a reason for it, so I wouldn't do it! May God be with you.
