heart problems?

Question:
has anyone had any negative side effects after a heart catheterization?

Answers:
Your mother should be fine. My husband has had at least 15 cardiac catheterizations in the last 15 years and has had no problems afterward. She'll need to take it easy for a while. No heavy lifting, but she should recover nicely. If you need to talk you can email me. My husband has had 4 open-heart surgeries, angioplasty, a stent, has a combination pacemaker/defibrillator. So, as you can see I've learned a lot about this. I know it's hard and scary, but the advances in medical science are truly amazing! I pray your mom has a full and complete recovery. God bless!

Other Answers:
I have had a total of four heart caths. Three of the entry wounds healed slowly but the fourth was done by a really good Doctor and it healed quickly. Angiograms are the gold standard for detecting heart problems.

I gather from your question that you are debating whether to undergo one. They will put your mind at ease but there are risks. I was told that 3 out of 1000 result in death. There is the risk of tearing a blood vessel. One of the caths that they performed through my arm resulted in some blood vessel damage in my arm. It healed.

Another Doctor warned me of the risk of stroke. There are some new noninvasive scanning procedures that are highly accurate but nothing surpasses an angiogram in accuracy provided it is read properly by a qualified cardiologist.
I wish you well.

are you young? i am and have had two caths, with no side effects. there were small grape sized lumps at each of my puncture sites that lasted a couple of months. nothing else.

Someone close to me has had 3 angiograms, the third immediately followed by a valvuloplasty, balloon widening of her mitral valve. She had no complications, was 39 for the first two, 59 for the third one. Yes, there are some risks, but they are rare, and today's procedures and equipment are state of the art. The patient is sedated and is awake for the procedure, must lie still, may be asked to hold his/her breath a few seconds. The entry point(s) in the groin should heal well within 7-10 days. Following doctor's directions should result in no healing problems.
