What causes canker sores and how do you get rid of them?

Question:
I don't know what causes them, and I really want to get rid of them.

Answers:
If you just have one or two canker sores, they are probably caused by something you've been eating or doing with your mouth. I went through of phase of drinking all cold drinks with a straw and tracked the sores I started getting to the sharp tip of the type of straw I was using. Eating a lot of nuts or foods like pretzels or corn chips can do it also. It's not the salt but the rough edges of the food that does it. A tough piece of meat can cause you to accidentally bite your cheeks as well.

The cure for this is salt! Pour a bit of salt in the palm of your hand. Wet the tip of your finger than dip it in the salt. Put the salt directly on the canker sore. Make sure you get lots on. This will sting for a second or two but suck it up! Afterwards it will feel a bit numb. You may have to do this one or two more times, depending how big the sore is, but it won't hurt as much next time. The salt cauterizes the sore and promotes fast healing. The sore should be gone in a day or so, sometimes just a few hours.

If the sores don't go away, see your doctor. You might have a serious vitamin deficiency or other nutrition problem. Bad teeth can also cause gum boils or an abscess. See a dentist about those. They will require antibiotics to treat.
