What factors determine how long a dental filling lasts? also, resin vs amalgam last?

Question:

Answers:
The problem with amalgam fillings is they have to drill away almost all of the tooth, leaving it very weak, so often the tooth will collapse after only a couple of years. Also they are ugly.

Resin ones, on the other hand, look far better, are much stronger and more durable. But you will probably need to sell your right arm to afford one, and they can react with your tooth tissue, especially if you are under 25, and cause pain for anything up to 6 months after you've had it. What's more, if decay occurs under the filling, they can tell with an amalgam one but not with a resin one, or not without an x-ray anyway.

Not many dentists will make you aware of those last 2 points, they want you to pick the expensive option, especialy in the UK as amalgam ones come under the NHS and resin ones don't. I do still normally go for resin ones, but you should know all the pros and cons before choosing.

all depends on how you take care of either of them after the denist does the work..
but i can tell you our experience with both ..i have some amalgam that are 45 years old and i have two resin that get redone every 3 to 5 years. the amalgam i perfer in the back..but for looks i use resin in the front..Everytime they redo a resin they remove more tooth , which i do not like.
my husband has some amalgam that are 60 years old and never replaced but his front resin ones last 3 to 5 years..
.my husband had two front amalgam on his two bottom front teeth that lasted 40 years a denist 6 years ago talked him into resin ,for looks.well bottom line they have been replaced two times.and last month they needed to be replaced again so he went back amalgam..

i know numerous people who have the same problem with having to replace resin ..and they went back to amalgam..
