I have poison ivy. what is in the blisters? And if I pop them, will the poison ivy spread?
Question:
Answers:
This old myth that the fluid from the poison ivy rash spreading the rash really needs to be put aside. It is the oil from the leaves of the plant that causes the rash. If you have thoroughly washed you skin of the oil you cannot continue to break out. The weeping fluid is lymph fluid as a result of the irritation. There are several OTC products that help dry the rash with calamine lotion being the worst to use as it is overly drying making the itch worse. If it is a widespread rash or involves the face you should see a doctor.
Other Answers:
Don't pop them.
Popping makes it spread.
If it gets really bad, and spreads alot, go to the doctor and they can give you medicine.
If it's not super bad, put alcohol on it, don't touch it.
But get IvyDry as soon as you get a chance.
My mom's extremely allergic to poison ivy, and she has to pretty much go to the hospital every time she gets it. Be careful. She never thought she'd get it. Ivy Dry helps her.
I'm lucky, I've never had it.
yes it will, the very best cure for poison ivy is Tagiment HD, the gas pill. it cures it up in about 24 hours. take 2, then 1 more about 12 hours later, and another 12 hours after that, and by then it should be gone., dont even mess with topicals, none work.
I don't know what's in them, but it will spread if you pop them. I worked in a pharmacy and the best thing we ever found for poison ivy is a product called Super Ivy Dry.you may have to ask for it, but most pharmacies will have it (behind the counter, but not a prescription). The Ivy Dry will dry out the blisters and help with the itching. Hope you feel better soon and resist the urge to pop!
All that is in the blisters is basically salt water. The rash is an allergic contact dermatitis from exposure to an oil (urushiol) secreted by the plant. Once the oil is washed off the allergy will not spread, unless you have a severe allergy to the urushiol where it spreads systemically. However, you should not "pop" the blisters. Any opening in the skin is a path for infection. Ivy Dry is a good over the counter cure, but a prescription topical steroid like betamethasone cream is the best treatment I have found.
