Mainly, phobias come from situations the patient believes he or she won't be able to, either control that situation, or control him or herself in that situation. So, from this basis, imagine how many different phobias there could be.
Agoraphobia, for example, is not exactly as popular knowledge has it, a fear of open spaces, but a fear of an uncontrolled situation. So agoraphobic people remain "sealed" in their houses not because it is indoors, but because they know the environment perfectly.
Phobias of animals arise from the "situation" of an uncontrolled living thing, that might do what we don't want it to do. Fear of venomous animals, like scorpions, snakes, or spiders, usually comes not from fear of being poisoned, but from fear of an unexpectede reaction from the animal.
Alike, there is a widely spread fear of the sea. The sea by itself doesn't kill (generally, unless you jump from a boat in the middle of a hurricane, obviously). Our great fear for the sea comes from the vastly unexpected situations that can happen there. Waves, rocks, poisonous fish, sharks that come from where they are least expected. As you see, the waves or the rocks are always there, poisonous fish sting you only if you step on them, sharks are not evil at all but big, sharp-toothed fish who's hunting territory you have inadvertently trespassed.
And on, and on, and on.
As you can see, there are infinite uncontrollable situations wich, accordingly, can create infinite different phobias. You name it!
