Why the BOILING WATER?

When a women was going to have a baby..
WHY did the Doctor..or whoever was in charge of the delivery.
ALWAYS tell someone to go "boil a pot of water".

For sterilization purposes, I guess. To clean off the baby after it's born, and clean up mama as well. It's really not a clean process; babies aren't born as clean as the movies make them out to be.

Boiling water is the sterilized water. The delivery should be conducted in a clean and sterilized atmosphere. So for the use boiling water is ordered.
