First of all you need to check that it is actually dandruff. most people think that dandruff is small white flecks ( like they show you on the TV ads) , however proper dandruff is actually larger flakes of skin that often have a bit of a yellow tinge to them and it is caused by a mite that lives on the skin. When they go over board with their breeding program it causes dandruff. Anti dandruff shampoos basically wipe out the mites, thus clearing up the damdruff for the time being at least.
However, if your head is shedding little white flecks it is more likely that you have a very dry scalp and using anti dandruff shampoos will make this a lot worse and could make it itch like mad.
treat it using a shampoo for dry scalp ( boots do a very good basic one , its in a white bottle with blue writing and lid last time I looked). You also need to make sure that you condition your hair ( same as if you had dry skin on your face you would use a moisteriser).
also up your level of water that you drink, steer clear of tea and coffee as these de hydrate, and make sure you are eating healthily. the hair and the scalp act as a barometer so will show really quick if you are putting a lot of crap into your system.
Rinse your hair and head in cool water to reduce any itching and also use products that contain tea tree oil as this in naturally antispetic .
Personally I wouldnt recomend that you bother with the GP, they know virtually nothing about scalp problems and will whack out coal tar shampoo no matter what it is - all nasty stuff.
If you think it is dandruf then you can disolve an asprin in water and rinse that over your hair.
Remeber that your skin cell turn over takes about 4 weeks so nothing major is going to happen until that has happened.
an indian head massage with the relevent oils can also help as it will give your lymph flow a boost ( thats what carries all the crap and toxins out of your body but it still wont combat mountains of maccies and chips if thats what you eat), and it will also reduce stress levels, one of the biggest triggers for any skin problems.

From log in IM assuming you are male and I know of lot of guys go ARGH but shave off the hair treat with t gel as it grows back and use a moisturising conditioner 2x a week this is what the dr recomemded for my 15 year old son after doing it 2x the shaving he is now dandruff free

If you have tried Nutrogena and Head and Shoulders, etc and nothing is working I would suggest seeing a dermatologist. They may have to give you a medicated shampoo because there is a type of dandruff, believe it or not, that doesn't go away with over the counter shampoo. How many times a day do you wash your hair? You should try going every other day. If you have thick hair that gets greasy easily try to wear a hat the day you don't wash. Washing everyday and sometimes more than once a day can irritate the scalp even more and create more dryness in turn creating more dandruff! I would strongly suggest going to see a dermatologist! They can help you and get you on the right track to a flake free do!

Arbonne Shampoo. It's the best!
If the Head & Sholders doesn't work, try B & B Tonic. It's expensive but it works for me.
Try real aloe vera.
I recently tried Scalpicin (spelling?)for the first time. It really does stop the itch, and the dandruff went away.
Be aware that different cures work for different people. There are several different types of dandruff. Some dandruff is shampoo that has not been completely washed out that has dried in your hair. Some dandruff is opportunistic Fungi. Some dandruff is psoriasis .
I have loads of dandruff too. I heard head and shoulders works good.
i found that a good mosterer shampoo is the best as a lot of shampoo dries the hair to much
