Sometimes it never goes back. Women normally need to do a bit of excersise to get it totally back to normal, but if they don't it will likely stay a bit flabby.

Generaly six weeks with proper diet and exersise. (c-section longer)
My belly went right back-not that I was thin to begin with, but i only had a tiny pooch, I watched my tummy deflate when she (the baby) came out. My sil has a very distended tummy afterward, though, it looked like 6 or 7 months pregnant. It depends on your body. You're not supposed to exercise for at least 6 weeks, but talk to your dr. When you stop bleeding (that depends too) your tummy should go down a little.
there will always be a lil belly i call it the baby buldge although its not flabby on all women it depends on the women s body and other factors such as diet excersie and rather u breast feed or bottle feed , and other factors are how much weight u gained during the pregnancy , i dont think to many women get there pre baby shape back i wouldnt worrie about it just tone the muscles u can by doing sit ups crunches etc but give your body time after all it went through nine months to get that belly and it will take time to get rid of it just be patient and dont get discouraged .
If ur not careful you could be stuck with it until you gather alot of money for plastic surgery..lol. No seriously,,, if you want to tighten up your belly you need to diet and exercise! If this is your first child,,,it usually takes anywhere from three months to a year to return back to it's natural state.. Good luck to yah..
I tell you from experience. My first belly blew me like a whale and I did not go until about 5 years of exercise, diet, pills shakes and all, and all of a sudden it went down but never got to the same shape.
Now I gave birth 6 months ago, and I breastfeed and keep a sensible diet do exercise and it still resembles at least 4 mos of pregnancy. And it sucks becuase I hate it! I know this time would be a double struggle to get all that fat to dissapear.
It depends on how much extra weight was gained during pregnancy. For a "normal weight" woman, that's a gain of 25-35 lbs. It's suggested that this weight be shed slowly, at a rate of about 1 lb/week; faster than that could affect milk production if the woman decides to breastfeed. So that could be about 6-8 months at that rate. As for what's actually average, it's hard to say. It depends on a lot of factors.

Your uterus takes time to get back to normal size. It will be stretch out (if you will) for at least six weeks before returning to normal size. This has nothing to do with weight loss or gain. If you are breastfeeding it might shrink sooner.
