..is it true that "god bless you" is derived from the fact that your heart skips a beat when you sneez?

Question:
ive just always wondered..and someone told me that it was true, then someone else told me it wasnt.

Answers:
In English-speaking countries, it is common for at least one person to say "Bless you" after someone sneezes. The traditional explanation for the custom is that it began literally as a blessing. Pope Gregory I the Great (540-604 AD) ascended to the Papacy just in time for the start of the plague in 590 AD (his successor succumbed to it). To combat the plague Gregory ordered litanies, processions and unceasing prayer for God's intercession. When someone sneezed, they were immediately blessed ("God bless you!") in the hope that they would not subsequently develop the plague.

heard this so many times. i think it's just a myth

I was always told "bless you" elvolved because in years gone by, people believed that sneezing was actually because your body was releasing demons.

Don't know where this arrived from but this is true that when we sneez every part of body stops, even heart skip a beat.

Actually, I have read that the term comes from a medieval belief that the soul skipped out of the body when one sneezed so that you were blessed so that while it was "out" nothing else could creep in. This would be then like possession by a demon, spirit or other sort of entity.

Actually there are many different reasons people say it. Most of them are superstition based. The most popular superstition is that your soul could potentially leave your body when you sneezed, so the "God Bless You" was to help keep away evil spirits. It is also a myth that your heart skips a beat.

hmmmm---that's what i had always heard, so i thought it was the gospel truth. but then again my goofy parents told me that 'ringworm' was caused by eating too many sweets. guess how silly i felt when i found out they had lied to me in order to discourage me from doing sweets!

don't you hate it when you get 'hung up' in the middle of a sneeze--it catches somewhere and it feels like the whole sneeze goes up into your sinuses! yuck.

I have heard so many thing to do with this. Ive heawrd that your heart skips thats y we say bless you. I also heard on this show that some people,(TRIBES) believe that when you sneeze your soul has escaped and the devil will get it if you are not blessed when you sneeze. Ive also heard from this weird show on sbs that when you sneeze you die and then come back again. The whole thing i think is friggin weird.
