Can a vegetarian get fat?

Question:

Answers:
Yes of course. I have been a strict vegan for a little over a year but I am still fat. However I didn't become fat as a vegan, that was when I was eating meat. Although I have lost some weight, I am still overweight.

Basically it all comes down to calories. In general vegan/vegetarian foods are less dense in calories than foods that contain dairy, eggs and meat. But if you're like me and you eat like a horse, you make up for the lower caloric density by eating more food. (Eating bag after bag of vegan cookies does not help either.)

Vegetarians and vegans as a population are on average slimmer than the meat eating population, but there is variation within any population.

But anyone whether vegan, vegetarian or meat eater who wants to lose weight in a healthy manner should eat a diet of mostly fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes.

You better believe they can!

Yeah why not its not MEAT!

Yes, I have seen fat vegetarians!

Yes, because it's calories that create fat.
Non-meat foods contain calories, so if a vegetarian eats too much (chocolate pie or whatever) they can be fat.

im sure they can lol

Oooh man. Yes they can. I've known quite a few overweight vegetarians. Check out the caloric-intake on tofu/soy products sometime.. yikes!

I'm not a vegetarian, but I have friends that are, and one of them got hugely fat after giving up meat. My therapist calls them "junk food vegetarians" --you can eat all kinds of food that's unhealthful and still be a vegetarian.
