How long does it take for a broken bone to heal completely?

Question:
I broke my wrist almost 2 years ago. When the cast came off, the x-rays were fine. My wrist is still very weak, however, and I can't put much pressure on it. It also hurts if I bend it a certain way. Is this normal?

Answers:
Because the cast was on for 6-8 weeks, the muscles were weakened considerably in that wrist. Sometimes in a compound brake-fragments of bone do not heal exactly straight. Sometimes a nerve gets pinched or tweaked. Is it your dominant hand? You could try simple exercises like squeezing a stress ball that is made of soft foam and does not put much pressure on the tendons/ligaments. You have to gradually build the wrist strength up. Normal- I don't know. If it bothers you-schedule an appointment with a doctor.

Other Answers:
Yeah, I broke my thumb when I was a freshman in high school. Two years later I broke it again, and it had never completely healed. I'm now a freshman in college and it's basically back to normal, even though every once in awhile it gets a little stiff. It depends on each person how long it takes to heal. For some, it may never 100% heal.

I thought the healing time was six weeks. I would go back to your doctor. That doesn't sound normal to me.

It takes 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the break. In children it can heal as quickly as 4 weeks. No, that isn't normal. You should have had physical therapy afterwards. I'm guessing you didn't do any and THAT is why you're having difficulty now.

no you should be totally healed by now mabe it healed wrong and there is pressure on a nerve

My waist bone broken last three years age. I have to plastered my hand for about 45 days.
You should see a hand specialist and check your bone attach normally.

It depends on person's age and severity of the fracture..
For younger people it will take 1 to 2 months..

Old people may took 6 months to one year.

My wrist did the same thing for 3 or 4 years because the doctor did NOT set it straight! (And I wouldn't let him re-break it and re-set it!. no no no!).
Hope this helps?

it is not the broken bone that is giving you problems now. it is the soft tissue around it. start doing exercise for it and start slow. just rotate it, first one way then the other. bend it forward and backward and side to side. it will take some time to get it back and you can expect some discomfort to start.

It takes at least three (3) months to six (6) months if its healing is not interrupted

2 years? That is a long time to be in pain. If the pain is new, it could be arthritis - a common side effect of age and breaks.
It's also possible that it healed wrong. Not just the bones, but the nerves, muscles and soft tissues could be out of place, or just weak. Hurting when you bend a certain way could be serious. It could also be that you need to stretch and exercise that wrist just like you do your other muscles. DO talk to your doctor. Your doctor can find out if their is residual damage that may require physical therapy or possible surgery.
