Go to beauty college. Here in South Dakota, you have to go for 2100 hours. Takes about 13-14 months. Check your school out carefully. If you're lucky enough to have a couple to choose from in your area, I'd poll some salons to see which one they recommend. In my state we have 4 colleges, and one seems to stand out the most when stylists are asked which one they think is better. You want to make sure you're taught business ethics, proper salon etiquette, how to treat clients etc. not ONLY doing hair. (By the way, my opinion, find a Pivot Point school.it's a method of learning hair design that really helps make it easy to understand. You'll be able to look at a picture and know how to execute the cut to get the look!)
Although pay is important, you want to make sure that isn't your only motivation for choosing this field. You've got to like working with people, from all walks of life, and have a passion for making them look great, and be flexible enough to bend when they know exactly what they want, and nothing you say can change their mind!! LOL
Beauty school can be tough. They say if you can work on the clients that come into a beauty school, you can work on ANYONE! Some can be a little wacky. Once you get your hours completed you will have to pass a State Board Examination. Usually a written and a practical exam. That is basically what beauty school prepares you for is to pass your state boards. Then once you get out of beauty school and into the salon, that's when the learning really starts! It can take a good 2 years to build up your clientele. Some long hours, working on Saturdays, and a lot of sitting and waiting for the next client to come in, but once you break through and get a following, it is awesome! I love my job, my clients. I can make in 3 work days, what I used to make in 5 days teaching at a beauty college!
When you do get out of beauty school, pick your salon carefully. You don't want to do a lot of moving around. Every time you move, it can be like starting over. You lose a percentage of your clients.
Some salons pay you hourly , some pay you commission. When you get to where you are doing well, sometimes you'd have the opportunity to rent a booth in a salon. Depends on what you want to do, and how the salon you choose handles paying you.
Hope I covered it all.sorry it I got a little long! :) Good luck with whatever way you decide to go!!

go to hair school.
You go to Beauty College. Each state has different hourly requirements to get your licence, and your licence is only good in the state where you got it. Most Beauty Colleges are on an ROP program and tuition is easy to get. I have been a hairdresser for 21 years and never regrettted a moment of it. If you can stand all day and you love people, its a great job..soooo flexible.
i agree with the above guy

Cosmetology is qualified under each state. I am a stylist in Ohio and I was in school for 10 months. No, It's not like semesters like a "College" However, You do have to get the recorded amount of hours in order to take the test. Here, students are required to have 1500 hours before graduating. And the pay amount varies. It all depends on the type of salon you choose to work in, and if you are going to be a specialist in a certain area. I work in a walk-in only salon, and our hourly rate varies. We are paid on a pay scale. So, the busier you make yourself, the more We are paid! Good Lucki put pictures in my blog thingy and now i can't see or find them. help.?
You've got to go to cosmetology school. Some community colleges offer this. You can also look online for cosmetology schools. The requirements vary from state to state, but once you find a school the instructors can give you more specific information. If you want to style hair you have got to be commited and open to learning all that you can because hair styles change so often. Also, once you start school keep up with your hours very closely because I've found that once you get behind it gets hard to get caught back up.Source(s):
