how do i get rid of hiccups?

Question:

Answers:
There are 2 ways I've found to be most effective, first is drink a glass of water and hold your breath while you do it and keep holding it as long after you swallow the water as you can, second when you start hiccuping think about your next hiccup, keep thinking about it as hard as you can and it usually stops, it sounds crazy but it's a psychological thing and it really works.

Other Answers:
Try holding your breath.Scare your self.a spoonful of sugar.

All the above or you could try bending forward and drinking a glass of water backwards.

drink a lot of water and hold your breathe

Hold your breath while taking a drink. This always works for me.

Swallow a teaspoon full of sugar. That works for me.

put a pen or pencil in your mouth (like a rose) and take a drink of water

punch yourself in the face

BOO!

Did it work?

Fill a water glass two thirds full with cold water. Place a butter knife in the glass. Drink the water from the glass as you normally would while holding the butter knife against your temple, still immersed in the water. This works.

pat your head. rub your belly. count back from a one hundred. all at the same time.

take a plastic cup of water and swallow it all in one gulp and try to burp at the same time while drinking.

works for me all the time

This may sound weird, but it works. It was taught to me years ago and I teach others and it works. I even used it today. Take your index finger and point it upwards (about 1 hand long in front of your face). Focus on some part of your finger very intensly. Then, slowly move it to the right and then the left (or vice versa), slowly, and looking at it VERY intensly.
It helps to have a white background, like a wall. When you focus on the finger, it relaxes the diaphram and subconsiously the body focuses on the natural state of breathing. But it only works if you are focused, move slowly, and have patience that it will work. Hope this helps and God bless you.

When I was younger I had the hiccups and my boss told me to plug my ears and drink through a straw.it worked and i have been doing that ever since. She told me her kindergarten teacher taught her that.

I agree with cathygirl32. Drink a glass of water upside down. It really works even thoe is sounds wierd.

Hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm; typically this repeats several times a minute. The sudden rush of air into the lungs causes the glottis to close, creating the "hic" noise. A bout of hiccups generally resolves by itself, although many home remedies are in circulation to shorten the duration, and medication is occasionally necessary. By extension, the term "hiccup" is also used to describe a small and unrepeated aberration in an otherwise consistent pattern. The medical term is singultus.

THERE ARE 4 MAIN WAYS TO CURE HICCUPS, THEY ARE
1.pshychosomatic
2.swallowing
3.Respiratory
4.Medical treatment

* Distraction from one's hiccup (e.g. being startled or asked a perplexing question)
* Concentration on one's hiccup
* Show and offer a $20 bill if the person can hiccup one more time

Swallowing

* Swallowing three times while holding one's breath
* Eating particular foods, such as peanut butter/Fluffernutter, chocolate, sugar or honey, Lingonberry jam, wasabi, vinegar
* Eating a spoonful of granulated table sugar (slowly letting it dissolve in mouth)
* Inserting one's thumbs in one's ears, closing one's nose with one's index fingers, and drinking a glass of water
* Drinking a glass of water through a napkin placed over the glass
* Drinking a glass of water in several small sips
* Drinking a glass of water "from the wrong side of the glass", i.e. bending over a sink so one's head is upside-down when drinking
* Drinking a glass of water with another's palms against one's ears
* Drinking a glass of a carbonated beverage (with salt)
* Gulping down a glass of water while holding one's breath
* Drinking a glass of water several times successively.
* Eating an ice cube
* Drinking a glass of water with a spoon touching one's Temple.

Respiratory

* Breathing slowly and deeply in while thinking 'breathing out' and breathing slowly and fully out while thinking 'breathing in'
* Breathing slowly and deeply in and out through the mouth
* Holding one's breath while optionally squeezing one's stomach
* Breathing deeply through the nose, then exhaling slowly through the mouth
* Exhaling all the air from one's lungs and holding one's breath while swallowing water or saliva
* Blowing up a balloon
* Inducing sneezing
* Breathing into a paper bag or other sealed container (Only attempt this in severe cases of hiccups that have persisted despite other attempts at cures. Perform this sitting or laying down, and with someone at your side to ensure safety. Stop as soon as you begin to feel lightheaded.)

A few people have the ability to stop hiccupping by simply choosing to do so. This brings up intriguing relationships regarding voluntary control of various body functions.

Medical treatment

Referred to as singultus, hiccups are treated medically only in severe and persistent (termed "intractable") cases. Haloperidol (Haldol, an anti-psychotic and sedative), metoclopramide (Reglan, a GI stimulant), and chlorpromazine (Thorazine, an anti-psychotic with strong sedative effects) are used in cases of intractable hiccups. In severe or resistant cases, baclofen (an anti-spasmodic) is sometimes required to suppress hiccups. Effective treatment with sedatives often requires a dose that either renders the person unconscious or highly lethargic. Hence, medicating singultus is done short-term and is not a situation where the affected individual could continue with normal work and school activities while taking the medication.

That answer by Ravi kick a lot of as*s. I think i am going to print that out and keep it in my wallet. Besides dying alone, being attacked by a shark, or being a participant of one of those "games" in Saw, hiccups are my worst fear.

i get the hiccups when im drunk

drink 2.5 sips ov water.voila ! iz gone

I learned this from my wife who is a nurse and it works extemely well. Close both eyelids and, using your fingers, put moderate pressure on your eyelids in the middle where the pupil is. Press moderately hard for 15-30 seconds or so. I hold my breath at the same time but it is the pressure on the eyelids that does it. It is a pressure point for some reason that works extremely well. And you can do it anywhere. Try it!
