My daughter broke both her wrists at school on the monkey bars..I was wondering.?

Question:
First, she goes to a bone specialist next Thursday..She has splints right now that she cannot get wet..do they make air casts or something made of plastic so she could wear it maybe while in the bath or shower?

ALso, is the school liable for her injuries? Should I even think that?

Answers:
Yes there is casts that are water-proof and yes the schools all carry liability insurance.

Other Answers:
They have rubber sleeves (they look like hot mitts) that you can buy at medical supply stores.

How old is she? I'd contact a lawyer. Was she being supervised properly? Doesn't sound like she was.

Well yeah, you don't want to be that person, maybe you could try to help the school acquire funds for better playground equipment. They have that stuff they put on the ground under the equipment that's made completely out of recycled tires. Throw a fundraiser or ask the state to update the playground for the safety of the children. Do some research on injuries that have happened there.

I just thought of something, and this is terrible, but, she's going to have some issues with the bathroom. You might want to ask the doctor about how to make that easier on her. Depending on her age, it could be an embarrassing ordeal.

wrap the splints in plastic bags and the school is liable if there was something defective on the monkey bars

no it isn't liable. you probably signed something at the beginning of the school year that makes them not liable for any injuries. don't waste your time suing the school, any money you get from them would just be taken away from what they could spend on students.

The school could possibly be responsible for your daughters injuries, if you think it is the correct thing to do, you should consult with a good personal injury attorney, who comes well recommended, it won't cost a penny.
Your daughter might be a candidate for a fiberglass cast, which is fine to get wet, that is up to your Orthopedic Specialist, ask him about it.
Best of luck to you and your daughter.

Broke BOTH the wrists? Hmm.. something doesnt seem right there. I'd take a look at the monkey bars, and probably take some photos too, just in case . However, if there is nothing wrong with the monkey bars, you obviously need to ponder on how this could've happened (how many cases have you heard of like this?). Was your daughter doing something she wasnt supposed to be, and it went wrong, she was too scared to tell you and said the monkey bars? Or, in the worse case, is she being bullied and this is the result of that?
As for the school being liable, I think that if it can be proven that it was the monkey bars, then yes, the school is most definitely liable as they failed to provide a safe environment for your daughter (and the other children) to play in.
I hope that everything goes well for you and your daughter!

Most casts can't get wet..Schools are not lible unless you are able to prove negligence.which is hard. Accidents happen..I work for the school system and have seen it many times.I have seen people try to sue and the only thing it accomplishes is a long drawn out thing that goes nowhere and causes expense to the family.

Hello,

I am a nurse and unfortuneately there is no cast that you can get wet, however if you tie a black bag over the cast it can protect, just make sure you don't cut off her blood supply!

Probably the best type of cast will be a fibre glass one but there may be reasons that she couldn't have one so she may be given a plaster of paris one.

Good luck!

It is possible to get a plastic covering to go over some casts and splints to be worn during a bath or for swimming. Your daughter's bone specialist will be able to advise you on that.

As far as liability goes, your school district should carry insurance for accidents such as your daughter's. There is no need to think you have to sue them or anything. The school office should be glad to get you the paper work you need or give you advice on how to handle it. It may also depend on your own personal insurance as well. Sometimes your own health insurance will cover the initial payments and will submit a claim to your school district's insurance. In a case like that, the two insurance companies will make the agreement on who pays what and you don't have to part of it. You will not likely have any problems with it.

Breaking both wrists might be something to be concerned about. Make sure she is getting enough calcium. Ask the bone specialist it seems logical that they would have something like that. If you can't afford to pay for the injuries a fund raiser might be an option. The school might be held liable, but i think real harm is being done by such suits. Not only do these suits deprive schools of money, but they also deprive children of normal physical activity.
It is safer to have 2 broken wrists then it is to lead a sedentary lifestyle.
