does sperm stay alive after it hits the air an if so how long?

Question:

Answers:
If I am not mistaken it can survive for up to 24 hours after ejaculation and longer if it is contained in an air-tight seal and refrigerated/frozen. I've known people that have gotten pregnant from semen that has been left on their underpants with no intercourse. Those little buggers have a mission and they will find a way from noway to get to that egg.

Other Answers:
Unfortunately, the previous person is wrong. There is no way that sperm left on underpants can get anyone pregnant. EVER.
Sperm, when ejaculated, is covered in a protein base supplied by the cowpers gland. It is the seminal fliud that protects the sperm and keeps it alive. When it is "injected" into a body where there is minimal air it lives and attempts it's mission of swimming for an egg.
During maturbation, or oral sex, there is just too much air. Period. The sperm dies. Your siliva and stomach acid kill sperm as well. Sperm are pretty delicate - the need to be within a certain window of temprature, and have to stay out of the air.
Rule of thumb: Once the ejaculate has gone clear, instead of white - it is dead. Time varies.
