very serious. spinal fusion takes months of recovery time and you will need physical therapy.
It's MONUMENTAL. One year ago, I got my L4/L5, and L5/S1 fused together, utilizing cavader bone, titanium rods, cages and screws, and a laminectomy. The fusion ended the pounding, aching sciatic nerve pain the ran down my legs.but the surgery itself was HELL. I could go into the horror of it, but I think more importantly is the outcome. A human being can withstand just about anything if the outcome is what he was hoping for.
One year later, I cannot walk very fast, or I get shooting pains down my legs. The fusions have caused so much pressure on the adjoining vertebrea that I'm facing additional fusions and rods and crud. There is not a day that I don't live in CONSTANT back pain. And the doctors consider my case to be a "successful" one.
If I could go back, I would work VERY hard at physical therapy.strengthen the muscles in the affected area. If you have damaged tissue or nerves, allow them to scrape that out.but NEVER let them CUT BONE, or fuse two together. It only puts more pressure on the other discs.
I've also been told that Yoga would strengthen and elongate the surrounding muscles. I'd also suggest traction and anti-inflammatories. Try swimming for relaxation and weightlessness.
But I would NEVER do it again. The doctors want to.but I would NEVER let them do that again. While in the hospital, we could tell who was new to the floor by the amount of screaming coming from their room. After the surgery, no one mentioned that bowel control would be almost non-existant.or that your back would ache FOREVER. Want to bend over to pick something off the ground - SORRY.you can't bend in the middle anymore.
It's horrible. Please.find ANY other option while you stll have a choice. I've ruined my body. Humans aren't mean to be made into mechanical beings. Things stop working like they're supposed to.and life will never be the same again.
Good luck my friend. I feel your pain.

Mother of four, 35 year old married woman. I can barely work, I'm always hurting, and I spend a lot of time preparing my kids for the fact that there's no way I'm going to live more than another 10 years. Pain like this wears a person out.
