Can gum disease spread from person to person?

Question:
My boyfriend just recently found out that he has gum disease and he has been working really hard to get his gums back to normal health. I just recently saw him, and I was just wondering if this is even possible for gum disease to spread through kissing? Today my gums have been feeling really weird. When I was eating, they all of a sudden started hurting really badly and they feel a bit swollen now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answers:
The bacteria that causes gum disease is transmissable from person to person, but because the bacteria itself is not the only cause, gum disease is not considered contagious. Several different people can have the same bacteria in their mouth, and even with the same oral hygiene practices, will develop gum and periodontal disease at different rates. Susceptibility of the individual plays a large part in progression of gum disease.

Just make sure to brush at least twice a day and floss daily. Make sure you're flossing correctly, it's not just getting food out from between your teeth. The Colgate site has a lot of useful tips. Make sure to visit a dentist at least every 6 months for regular check-ups and cleanings. If there is any tartar (calculus) build up, it creates an area for more bacteria to grow and can only be removed by a dental professional.
