How old do you have to be to have a menstrual cycle?

Question:

Answers:
Great question! It depends a great deal on your weight and lifestyle. Girls may begin their cycle as young as 8 or 9 or as old as 17-18. Girls who are athletic and have a very low amount of body fat and a healthy diet, may not begin their cycle as early as their other peers. Take gymnasts and competitive swimmers for example, these young women may start their periods later because of the lean body mass and low body fat. Your body must have around 30% body fat in order to create the onset of menstruation. When your body hits puberty, you may experience an increase in this body fat in combination with the development of secondary sex characteristics like the swelling of breasts and the development of public hair. Usually, this means your period will soon be knocking on your door. Girls who live in the city and tend to have a diet that is high in fast food, chips and pop, often begin their periods earlier because they gain this body fat pretty quickly and easily. So the final answer is: Age really isn't a factor at all.

Other Answers:
The average age to have your first period is 12 years old but this can vary person to person.
