Social anxiety ruining my life.?

Question:
I have social anxiety, and have tried many different ways of ridding myself of the problem. I've seen three therapists, been on many different medications, but something inside of me won't let me get even one step closer to being normal.

I'm not shy around friends or people I'm close with, just around people in power and women. For example, I need to get my medical records transferred from one doctor to another. I know the original doctor will ask me why I'm transferring records (the reason being, I don't feel like he's done a good job), but instead of talking to someone at his office directly, I left a message on his answering machine at night. Also, whenever I see a cute girl somewhere, I have this deep desire to approach her, but I just can't. I feel strange even making eye contact. I'm especially awkward in situations where I know someone, but I'm not sure if they remember me. I just don't know what to do, so I try to avoid the situation as much as possible. What can I do?

Answers:
It sounds like you may have some self-esteem issues as well as social anxiety. Maybe you need to request to a therapist that you focus on your self-esteem and assertiveness and by focusing more on that, I'm sure you can overcome your social anxiety without even having to resort to medications.

have you tried hypno therapy as one of your therapies? i used to have panic attacks and hypnotherapy cued me of them

if you have a confident smile (no matter how your feeling inside ;)) and you dont say anything offensive, i dont think you need to worry about anything. People appreciate being told the truth, if put diplomatically !! best o luck :)

Hey there,
I've had the same problem for years. I've done therapy, meds and the only thing that worked for me, though I still struggle with it, is just forcing myself to do it. I know it's a crummy answer but it's true.
I've been know to order a pizza and then tape the money to the door with a note so I don't have to answer. It's no way to live and I have found that once you make that phone call or answer that door, you gain confidense and you feel less agitated and anxious. You feel like you've actually accomplished something. I sent a letter to my doc because I needed to change doctors and get the records. I've found ways to accomodate myself but mostly I just bite the bullet and do it. I call to make an appointment and waiting on hold gets my anxiety going, so I hang up, take a breath and call back and tell myself, it's ok, nothing to worry about, no one is going to think I'm weird and that positive self talk usually helps. I'm giving you a link to Amazon. It is for a book, called The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook. It's really neat and it's pro-active and it has helped me greatly. It's interesting to hear such similarities between us. I'm sorry you're suffering but you'll get through this.

Just as Miss Nurse said, a therapist can help, if you truly want help, go see one who also does hypnotherapy, one who can re program out all of those bad or negative issues.
