It looks sort of like a cat scan machine. You lay down on the long table, board looking thing .You go into the big tunnel, round thing its open both ends.you don`t remove your clothes.Your there five minutes tops.Doesnt hurt. the whole process doesn`t take over five minutes thats the going into room and the coming out.Easyest test I took.It measures the thickness of your bones.

Other Answers:
a bone density test helps determine your risk for osteoporosis.

He either suspects osteoporosis or you're menopausal age group. It doesn't hurt at all (except when you get the bill). You just lie there on your back and an xray type machine scans your spine and then one of your hips.

Registered Nurse

I had it done a few years ago when I broke some bones in my foot. Because I am in my 20's my doctor was worried that my bones were brittle. It is like the registered nurse said in her reply. Painless and over in a few minutes.

I do DEXA scans at work. Many times we do this test as a screening tool, much like doing a mammogram on a woman who has no symptoms of breast cancer. DEXA scans are the easiest and most cost effective test to measure bone density.
