what is the meaning for marriage?
Question:
Answers:
Marriage only has meaning in a social context. A single man and a single woman on an island whith no other people would have no reason to ever become married (ever wonder why the Bible never tells us that Adam and Eve were married?)
Depending upon the society in which one lives (the other people missing from the island), marriage is usually viewed as a precursor to having children. The society can believe in one man-one woman relationships or something more complex.
Societies developed from Western culutre currently follow a monogamous model. Marriage is considered a civil and/or religious contract which specifies the vows taken and the legal consequences.
Marriage is considered a lifelong relationship, but the theory and reality often clash.

You might want to post this question in Society & Culture and Politics & Government. There are many opinions about this issue and here's mine:
A marriage license is a government-issued document stating that two individuals have chosen to commit to each other based on the government's guidelines. If either one of those people doesn't follow those guidelines, the other can sue for divorce. For this reason, I am not opposed to same-sex marriages. Legally, the married partners are given certain rights that unmarried couples do not have, that relate to finances, medical decisions, and so on. However, there are some other ways that unmarried couples can address such issues through other legal docments, like living wills, power of attorney, standard wills, etc.
If the two individuals choose to include religion in their marriage ceremony or vows, then they are also agreeing to abide by the gudelines of that religion, which may specify that the union must be between a man and woman. If the couple breaks up, the religion may also have procedures or consequences, like the Catholic church that has anullment or won't allow you to re-marry in the church if you were previously married and it wasn't annulled.
Having been married and divorced once, and in a long-term relationship since, in addition to observations about others' experiences, I find that marriage is beneficial when children are involved. It probably is also a good idea if one person is providing substantial support for the other, as most medical benefits through employers can only be extended to a spouse and children.
Now that I'm older and won't be giving birth again, and I provide reasonably well for my teenager and myself, I don't think I'd get married again. A strong committment can exist without a piece of paper or jewelry.
Marriage is a social, economic and legal union between two people.
The social aspect comes into play in how people relate to the couple. We have different expectations of behavior for people who are married vs. those who are single. This can go from going to a party together up to embracing the same religion.
The economic aspect is that married couples share the "business" of having a household. A couple will share responsibility for debts, house maintenance (for example, cleaning, or calling the plumber for a pipe leak), economic decisions, etc.
The legal aspect of marriage comes in terms of what privileges and responsibilities the law requires of the couple. Responsibilities include shared responsibility for any children, economic responsibility and sometimes shared responsibility for crimes that may be committed by one person. Privileges include such things as being default inheritor in case no will is available, being able to visit spouses in hospitals when no other people are allowed to visit, automatic enrollment in each others and so on.
Somewhere on the net is a list of over 1,000 privileges that are legally available only to married couples.
