but i think it's from way way way back.
yawning is a way of showing that you feel safe and are comfortable.. in the animal world.. just look at dogs..

It's a bad habit.

its something to do with you relate yawning with being tired. therefore when you see someone yawn you relate and because you as well are tired. yawn.

the true answer is this,
when a person yawn ,another people who see him or near to him would also do same within 5 minutes of time, because its nitrogen which allow comple others to do it aswell, but one can stop himself not to yawn to ignore it from his mind.

thats called social yawn.
