i have a question.?

Question:
a few days ago my blood was tested and anything 10 or lower is considered dangerously anemic. mine was 10.4 are there things other than these horse pills that i can take to raise it. what can happen if it stays low?

Answers:
if it stays low from what I understand from family members being anemic your body could go into shock and that can bring on other illnesses. being anemic is not a good thing because your body needs the iron to fight off infections and viruses. That is why people who are anemic if they do not take care of themselves they are always cold and they are always sick with the flue or a cough.

Other Answers:
ask the doctor not here.

Eat red meat and spinach for iron.

There are ways you can change your diet. I believe (but look this up, don't trust me on it) that more meat makes you less anemic. And I vaguely remember something about like. watercres. I don't remember, but there's a bzillion sites out there where you can look it up diet changes to help with anemia.

Eat iron rich foods dark green leafy veggies, beef liver, steak, most any kind of meat. Nuts are good. Be sure when u eat iron rich food u accompany it with a food rich in Vitamin C. Vit C helps the body absorb iron. Vit C foods are fruits especially citrus, cabbage, orange juice, can't think of any more right now.

If u don't like these foods buy some Ovaltine and add it to your milk(if u r a milk lover) it has iron in it. I did this when my son was little and his iron was low, a dietitian recommended it and it worked.

Good Luck!

I am borderline anemic. There are a variety of medications for it. Tell your doctor this one isn't helping.
I use Feosol (an over the counter iron supplement) for everyday maintenance.

eat alot of iron..you can get juice with iron,as well as eating rare meat..but the iron pills are small,so thats not a problem..my daughter is anemic, and we control it with a flintstone vitamin with iron.try that.but if you do nothing, it can cause blindness, heartfailure, infertility and lots of other gross stuff.

Eat more iron-rich foods (red meat, leafy greens, etc).stay away from an iron supplement because you can poison yourself if you take too much..take a daily multivitamin too.

Depends on what was low. if it's your iron, you can take supplements or eat iron rich foods. If it was your B12, you'll probably have to get B12 shots to bring it back up. They usually do them once a week for four weeks then once a month after that. Ask your doctor specifically what you need to do to bring your levels up to normal.

10 or lower on what? or what is the upper limit?
And yes it could be dangerous if you became anemic.

There are over the counter iron pills that are not that big that you can get at Wal-mart. But, I would continue taking the huge pills that the doc gave you until you have another lab done and your iron is built up some. Anemia is usually a symptom of another illness, I would continue to watch it and see your doctor if it persists.

Take chicken or any animal's liver or organs meat., they are rich in iron. But due to health reasons, we are advised not to take them. Go to your pharmacist and ask him to recommend some iron pills and multivitamins for you. By the way, taking a half-boiled egg every morning and also milk should be good for you.

Your doctor should really be answering this.but anyways, iron pills shouldn't really be horse pills.the ones I take aren't much bigger than birth control pills. There are low-dose pills (green) and higher-dose ones that are red. One thing you should know though, is that you need to take iron with citrus juice or fruit in order to properly absorb it, and to prevent the symptoms caused by iron supplements. Also, you should be incorporating iron into your diet. Dark green veggies, leafy greans especially (spinach being the "ideal" choice) and red meat are all scources of iron.

You should also ask your doctor about the timing of your test.I was told that where you are in your menstrual cycle can affect the results of iron volume in your blood. If you're just borderline, your doc may want to retest.
