The trick with tampons is getting them in straight. If you use an applicator it will be much easier for you to get it in right.
Read the directions and get it in as far as you can - if you can still hold onto the applicator, you can't get it in too far. An applicator that is rounded at the top is better than not and don't go for scented. If you get lightheaded or very uncomfortable after you put it in, take it out.

every girl is different because of the position of the uterus so you have to figure out what is comforable for you. There should be suggestions in the box, like she said. If you feel sick or start to puke then take it out RIGHT AWAY cuz thats what'll happen if you are experiencing TSS
Follow the instruction on the box, tampax pearls are more expensive but Definitly worth it if you are gonna be swimming all day. take frequent bathroom break and wash that area well after swimming to avoid trapping bacteria , change you tampon every 4-8 hours depending on your flow.
Use the least absorbant tampon you need to avoid TSS. I'm guessing yout young, so the slender regulars should probably do it for you. The packages have pretty good directions as well. Now you can buy boxes that have like 3 different sizes in them. If you can't ask your mom/sisters/friends for advice the school nurse will be helpful.
