How does a straight guy learn the basics of dressing?

Question:

My mom has always bought my clothes and I simply have no exposure to what's right or wrong to wear and stuff about matching. I don't really need to make a fashion statement, but I don't want to embarrass my date for instance. Looking for general generic type of advice, rather than a shopping list of your favorite brands. TY.

No joking - I think every guy should watch the show on Bravo channel - "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." It gives some pretty basic advice on dressing for your personality, personal grooming and all that stuff (and the guys are also hilarious). You don't have to tell anyone you watch it- but I know a LOT of straight guys who watch it and admit it. A few weeks ago Kevin Bacon had The Guys re-do his brother. I put the web link below.
