Why do people eat meat?

Question:
Why is it that people think it is ok to eat meat when there ARE ALTERNATIVES to killing animals just for our consumption and use? I think it is selfish. Plus meat is bad for you. There is a very healthy substitute for every meat, so what are people thinking?

Answers:
Ughhh, I don't know why people do. It is rancid. Who wants to actually eat another animal? It is so last century to be a nasty carnivore.

Plus why should all of the animals suffer when there are alternatives? People are selfish, and ignore the facts so that they can keep on being gluttonous in their consumption of dead cow, pig, etc.

Hey if you like eating dead animals, good luck to you, because your health is deteriorating with every bite.
This is pure medical facts.

Other Answers:
Meat is not bad for you. It has protein and other stuff in it. God made the animals to be eaten.

it yum

How about why are their vegetarians?

Well it's all personal choices. Maybe the "substitutes" are not very pleasing to some meat eaters taste buds. I'm a meat eater. Always have been since I can remember and I don't plan on changing that anytime soon, just like someone that doesn't eat meat doesn't plan on eating any. People are going to do what they're going to do for their own reasons and beliefs.

tastie

First off, it's not bad for you.

People eat meat because we've evolved to eat meat. It's biological instinct. We eat meat for the same reason that tigers or wolves or voltures eat meat.

That said, I don't eat meat either :)

Crystal - Christina's response was no less mature and rational than yours was. While she is wrong that there is no alternatives, it is simply not the case that it is healthier not to eat meat. It is true that eating to much fatty meat is associated with heart disease, but eating no meat at all is associated with anemia. Eating lean meat in moderation is the healthiest option. I also don't quite understand your option about "those who cannot affort to buy the alternatives" as the alternatives cost less than the meat.

Interesting, I've noticed that several people are under the impression that meat is the most readily abundant source of food. However, farm animals eat grain. The number of people who are fed with animal is considerably less than the number of people who could have been fed with all the grain it ate (it's something like a 10-fold difference). Whoever it was that said there might not be enough food to go around if people stopped eating meat, there ISN'T enough food to go around now, and if everyone stopped eating meat there WOULD BE enough. To me that is one of the major arguments for vegitarianism, and I'm surprised so many people have missed it.

Dixie - Instantaneously ending any large-scale operation would cause problems. I don't think that anyone was advocating that production of meat be stopped immediately - it would be a gradual process.

meat is tasty mmmmmmmmmm chicken!!

Human is the only "animal" who eats everything (not only meat).

meat has preteins that your body needs that the vegetables dont have, and pplus its so very good

meat is not bad for you, & many people like it. this question is clearly stated to raise an arguement, so, if you want to ask a question that has meaning, great, i'll try to help, just don't try to force your ways or beliefs on others. have a great saturday!

Let's assume your statement about eating meat being bad for you is universally true (I think we'd find evidence that SOME meat in MODERATE amounts is not bad, but I want to address the question of WHY).

Smoking is bad - people still smoke.

Drinking alcohol is bad (especially for alcoholics and children) - people still drink.

Killing people is bad - people still murder.

Lying and cheating and swearing and gossiping and name-your-own-vice-here is bad, people still do it.

I think you'll find that people DON'T THINK, all too often. Many people have one or more areas in their life where they seem to do what they WANT to do, not what they SHOULD do.

I think ultimately "growing up" is all about deciding what things in your life are important, and worth "thinking about". That's the mark of growing into adulthood - putting more and more of the important SHOULD do's in front of the less important WANT to do's.

Meat tastes good, smells good, and plumps when you cook it. Meat is one of those things that makes you glad you're at the top of the food chain so you can enjoy it.
Anyway you should know that the modern man evolved faster by eating meat (more proteins - less effort).

I think it's ok to eat meat because I can eat meat. There are no real alternatives to killing and eating animals. You can get proteins from other sources, but there are specific types of proteins that you can only really get from meat. Plus in red meat there are already processed forms of iron ready for your body to absorb.

Get off your high horse, and understand that your views are not the only right views.

You need to understand that killing an animal for food is natural and not wasteful. It keeps populations down and keeps from overstressing the plant population. As long as animals are killed for food, or clothing, their sacrifice is not in vain.

Is your father or mother a farmer? Is your livelyhood depended on the slaughter of animals? It's very easy when your parents are rich and working in a city to look down on others.

eating meat is not bad for you!i think your just crazy!! we eat to survive. think you would not probly be here if we didnt eat meat becouse along time ago what would are ansestors eatin to survive. becouse they hunted for MEAT!!
ANd IT TASTE GOOD! your just some ugly wana be skinny girl who wont eat meat. cus ur wierd!!

People eat meat because they made it to the top of the food chain. People eat meat because it is an excellent source of protein that has been available since hunter/gatherers discovered how to set a trap or make a weapon.

If everyone stopped eating meat today, what do you think would happen to all those animals being raised as a food source? Do you think they would be kept as pets? Do you think they would survive if "set free"? They would become food for other animals in the food chain and probably meet with a much more unkindly death than they do now. Many would die of starvation because their food sources now would have to be used for humans (either pastures converted to growing food or using the grains fed to livestock to meet the extra plant food demands required by humans).

I'm not against anyone being a vegetarian or a vegan and think it is a perfectly healthy lifestyle when balanced. I am also against cruelty to animals and do feel that there is a balance of humaneness that should be conducted when raising/slaughtering animals for food. In my opinion many animal activists tend to voice indignities without thinking through all the facts. If set free in nature all animals will face death either by starvation from over-population or by death from "higher-ups" on the food chain. Only the fittest survive.

One more question: Let's say you could wave a magic wand and no one on Earth eats another animal. Can you personally guarantee that if everyone quit consuming animal/dairy products today that there would be enough food for everyone..or would you be dooming many more humans to starvation? Remember, grocery stores get their alternative products from someone that has to grow it and there are plenty people on Earth starving right now because they can't grow plants and don't have animals available!

I belive that people eat meat because they are ABLE to eat meat, being a human means you are known as an omnivore, so we can eat both plant and animal life together, unlike say cats who only have the teeth to eat meat. Meat is not necearraly bad for you, its a natrual source of protien, if red meat then iron as well, vitamens and minerals, eating to much meat is of course bad, but then again eating to much of anything can be bad for your health, just like people can die from drinking to much water. What is truly a contrbuting favor an cardiovascular diease such as Hypertension, is the fact that we are in a nation that a lot of people dont exercise enough, or at all, even eating plant - like you can develop hypertension if you dont exercise enough (which is not the only factor). I'm of course for eating meat, I do understand that everyone has their own option though, I love to hunting myslef, I think its a great way to get a good meal, as well as get some exercise and realive stress.
