It's caused by lack of food passing through your digestive tract. Your stomach and intestines continuously move by peristalsis which is wave like contractions. These contractions move food through your system. When there is no more food, what we call growling is actually just your insides contracting without food.

its like a dog, dont feed it and it growls at you knob head !
