Why Do We Hiccup? What is the Purpose?

What is the purpose?
Cough - to clear the lungs
Sneeze - to remove irratants from the nose
Hiccup - ?

Answers:
there is no purpose to hiccuping it happens when food goes down our esophagus to fast and our wind pipe(trachea) gets food caught in it
my advice to u is dont eat too fast

Indegestion, gas, air in the system.

I don't know the purpose, but It happens because you take air in while you eat. It also happens when you haven't eaten in a while.

It's something to do with the diaphragm going into spasm. I always meant to listen in Biology lessons, pity I never got round to it.. :)

Air is under your diaphram. You hiccup to get it out of the way.

air or to much to eat or you got scared

random spasms of the diaphram, kind of like when muscles twitch, may also be to get air or gas out of your body

I once read that it is not known what cause hiccups.

usually caused by eating too fast or too much or too excited when eating. happens when the flap cant open and close right. its called the esophagus.
