can a consumer h20 bottle sit empty for months, then be re-filled for consumption?

Question:
i had an empty Sparkletts© bottle sitting on my desk at work for months and I finally threw it away. I've kept it in case I forgot my water, and wanted to re-fill it for consumption. I was wondering if there was a non-toxic life for empty water bottles. Any intellectual help is appreciated. :)

Answers:
I've read bad things about bacteria that form in used water bottles that sit for awhile without being thoroughly washed AND dried first. I'd throw it away and start with a new bottle of water.

Other Answers:
You could wash the bottle an get rid of what ever has been growing inside. Some of the plastics degrade after there has been air contact inside the bottle but its very rare. I've only heard this stuff never really did any research tho. Its a good question.
