What to do about OCD?

Question:
I think I have OCD, but I don't think I have a horrible case of it. (It's just every object has to be in it's place or it'll drive me nuts. And I check the door locks like 4 times before I can go to bed. Just little stupid stuff like that.) I am scared to go to the doc for it. And when I notice I am being like that it drives me crazy but I can't stop. What should I do?

Answers:

See a psychiatrist who can prescribe you medication.

Also, see a psychologist. He/she will be able to talk about it with you.

Check out http://www.nimh.nih.gov/healthinformation/ocdmenu.cfm. They have info about OCD. Try searching for it on the web, too.

Go to a therapist. It's quite common.

go to the doctor and get put on meds. it won't go away by itself.

I don't think you are a full blown OCD case, as you seem to agree to that, Some people have certain things ( I always worry I didn't turn the stove or my straightener off) It's just something you do

Also my 7 yr old can sit there and move objects from one container to another for hours and has done this since she was a baby she has PDD and form of autism

Get a doctor to refer you to a behavioural psychologist who will help you unlearn your controlled behaviour patterns and pretty soon you won't worry about where things are so much or the locks etc. its partly a habit and you just need some help to unlearn it and partly a symptom of something else that you need to get to the bottom of. Good luck!

I would seek professional help before it escalates into a bigger problem. It is sometimes also a symptom of other underlying issues that are too difficult to deal with.

Just go to the doctor for it, there's no reason to be scared I mean what are they going to do kill you? You might not have OCD because you could just be like me checking things all the time and for me it has to be in a certain place but I would just keep an eye out on it for a little while it might stop. But go see a doctor to be sure in the mean time.

Take it from a fellow OCD "Victim" - I have 8 brothers & sisters and 4 of us have it to a degree. . . Mine doesn't get in the way of my life. . My brother literally is so obsessive complusive his marriage is falling apart because of it - He can't have a normal life without meds. . so - if it is getting in the way of your day to day activities to the point where you can't really "function" definitely go to the doctor- - when my brother is actually taking his medicine the way he is supposed to = he is great!
I hope this answer helps you out. . .and I totally know the feeling!!

Relax. Don't drug yourself whatever you do. Channel your energy into advancing your career or personal growth.

Plenty of successful people are technically OC and are successful because of it. It is only a disorder if you decide it is.

Make an appointment with a psychologist who can best diagnose this disorder. Get a referral from your PCP if necessary, but DO IT. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is no fun as you well know. Do not be afraid to see someone. You will be much happier if you get this under control. You will most likely have to see a psychiatrist as well for medication therapy. Do it for your own mental health.

firstly, you must realize that EVERYONE has some thing (or things)that they do that is at some level of obsession.for instance,if i don't open my bag of chips upside down,it just bugs me.but if you obsessive behavior is harming you or others in some way, look for some kind of guidance.(in your own mind or from others).but i bet its just normal stress.we're all really just crazy any way:)

intelligence usually comes with OCD, just try not to make it a problem for OTHERS. Believe me, I have been there by having OCD and other family members having OCD. Control it with your life style.

GOING TO THE DOCTOR IS THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO BESIDES DEALING WITH IT!

Go see a psychiatrist or counselor as soon as possible because it could get worse. I have OCD and the best medication to take for it would be Luvox. Pray to the Lord asking Him to help your mind to be 100% totally free and clear from it.

I've had some form of OCD my whole life, and it has changed forms since my childhood.moved to different things. But I didn't even realize ANY of my behavior was "odd" until about 4 or 5 years ago.

It never hurts to hear what a doctor has to say about it..what types of treatments/medications could be beneficial. But over time (without a doctor) I have learned to acknowledge the OCD tendencies I have, and whether or not they are things to be concerned about. I also think that once you recognize what they are, you find ways to cope with them.

I think the first step is being able to point out which behaviors are related to being OCD. And most importantly--how much does it impact your life? For example, does it hinder your daily activities? does it prevent you from going places or getting things done? If it is affecting other areas of your life, then it is definitely worth seeing a doctor about. If you are wary of seeing a doctor, and your OCD habits are don't prevent you from functioning day to day..then you may find that you accept it as part of your routine/habits, or find your own "survival" ways to cope.

I'm much like you. I also drive myself nuts! And I don't want to go to a doctor either.

Here are some techniques I use which you may find helpful.

For the obsessive checking and rechecking - this may take some practice, but when you're locking the door, stop and think about what you're doing. Say to yourself, "I'm locking the damn door!" So many things we do are by rote, and we don't remember doing them. If you consciously think about what you're doing, it will help you to break this habit.

Make lists. I find that when I'm getting all freaky about something, writing things down helps me. I'll make ridiculous to-do lists, but it gets things off my mind for a while.

Tell yourself to shut up already! Don't try to logic yourself out of doing things; it doesn't work. Just say "no, I won't ________."

Not cures, but these coping mechanisms have helped me.

OCD is all about feeling in control in some way. You said you can't stop. What do you think will happen if you did? Is it an irritating feeling like something is left unfinished? Try to see how long you can go without doing your rituals. When you are going through this test of self control ask yourself why am i driven to do this, why do I need to be in control of this?
When you check the door and every object has to be in it's place what is it doing for you? There is a reason. It is giving you something. I think if you can find the answers to this it will be much easier to stop.

Just tell yourself, "It doesn't matter if I put that where I want it or if I locked the door enough. What matters is what is happening now, not in the past" i have slowly stopped, overtime
