Why do people ask medical related questions on answers?

Question:
isn't a bit risky taking advice from untrained people?

Answers:
Just for the thrill of it all. I especially like the do-it-yourself surgery questions.

They don't usually get back to you after those.

But I did my own eye surgery once. Just used a mirror and an xacto knife with a little alcohol.

Other Answers:
because they think doctors actually read this stuff..or because they dont want to go to a doctor just yet and are simply asking for advice.

Yes I share your concern.
It is highly risky to take it from random people.

it's just like asking a friend for advice, except we are a whole bunch of people you don't know.maybe some are afraid of doctors.they may also catch a trained professional on here, during whatever spare time he or she may have.

no because most of the time they are just asking things that normal people would know about.and if not, the answers are always "go ask your doctor" anyway.

we do read this stuff. and sometimes we feel the need to stop some of the incredible misinformation that gets passed around.

I think people are just looking for suggestions. It's just like mentioning something to a friend. I don't think anyone would be silly enough to replace their GP with this. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with asking for an outsiders opinion on a medical problem especially when it's likely that there is someone out there who is experiencing exactly the same symptoms as you are.

Because health care sucks and people don't have enough money to go to the dr. they just want some advise.

Its's usually a question the dr. can't take their precious time to answer.
