Building up your muscles?

Question:
I'm 19, 175 cm and weigh approx. 57 kg. which means I'm on the slim side. I'd like to build up my muscles, but where should I start? Since I'm already thin, I keep thinking that if I work out, I will loose weight instead of building my muscles, is that right? Also, should I perform heavy power training to build up my body or just regular easy workouts at a gym? And, is it advised to buy these muscle enlarger protein things you find in big buckets in the supermarkets?
The reason I'd like to build some muscle is mainly because I realize how vulnerable you can be in this society if you can't protect yourself. It may sound cliche, but if you are big and strong, people are less likely to attack you, or to throw any dirty words in your face. It's really also out of self defense that I'd like to get more buffed. I know I won't be any Annold Schwarzenegger in a month, but I'd like to at least know where to start, so I could build on that in the future.

Answers:
If you lift weights, you will build your muscles. And unless you're planning on becoming a professional body builder, you won't need any sort of supplement. Just be sure to eat more protein. (Meat, eggs, dairy, nuts, beans.)
