when you put a child with speech delay age 3 in a class of autistic children can they pick up behaviors?

Question:
my son was not diagnosed with autism but was put in a class with 5 autistic children from age 3 to 5 he does have speech delay he seems to have picked up some autistic behaviors and now they are saying he is autistic?strange and it does not sit well with me i think these people are a little off!should I get another opinion?can kids pick up different behaviors?i believe yes what do you think?

Answers:
My step son is 11 and he's autistic. mild and high functioning but he still has a lot of the autistic traits. My step daughter is 6 and we recently had her tested for autism since she was showing traits of autism as well. Come to find out, she's not autistic, she's emulating her brother.

Any 3-year-old is going to pick up traits from those that he is around. If his issue is one merely of delayed speech, then he needs to be working with a speech therapist. I'm rather surprised that he is placed with autistic children as any health care or educational professional worth their salt knows that young children are extremely impressionable.

However, if you have concerns of autistic behavior at all.and if your son has not been diagnosed by a psychologist who specializes in autism, then I would highly suggest you bite the bullet and have him evaluated. if nothing else for you peace of mind.

Yes they can ! Even more so at age 3, they imitate everything at that age, although if I were you I would go and get a second opinion, that is always good and sometimes a third opinion, of course check the background of the specialists and opinions of others.
I have a nephew and he has a bit of a speech delay, we all thought he was kinda autistic because he would play with himself alot and not look at you in the eyes, and a few other things autistic children have. But big but here kids with speech delay also tend to have these characteristics because they are aware of there speech delay and they get frustrated because no one understands what they are trying to say. That is what her doctor told her. And I think it is true also, he has been going to the classes for almost a year I would say and he has gotten much much better. But get a second opinion that is always best. My nephew is also 3 years old.

In the first..about 5 yrs of a kids life, they pick up on everything. At home..you will notice this. They will copy the behaviours of older siblings, parents, friends, the people who are around in their life often.
It is very possible that your child is just picking up the behaviours. He may see that these Autistic kids are getting more attention and wanting to get in on some of that. Or, he may just find the way they act to be different from what he sees normally, and finds that interesting and wants to try.
I think that it is wrong of the teachers to try and diagnose your child, and that the things that I have mentioned can be possible. Some autistic kids do have speech delays, but not all, and it is only one of the many signs that contribute.
Does your child keep to himself? Is he a stickler for routine? Does he have a hard time picking up on the tone of your voice meaning different emotions? These are some very common signs of autism.
I would say that if you are really worried about this to take him to go see a psychologist. If you don't want to do this yet.at least.maybe find a different place for him to go and see if these behaviours continue.
:)

They sure can! Especially if the teachers of the class let the kids get away with inappropriate behaviors..

Yes, they can. My husband used to be a psychologist and he said, live with it long enough and you become it. Get some poetry books for your child to read. And teach him or get some music and teach him to sing. The comprehension of these will affect the way he says things. He will understand better because he will have to think, about more than one thing at a time, he needs to train his brain to think differently.
