What are some conditions that can cause spikes in blood pressure?

Question:
I've been on lopressor since April 27th. So far my dosage has been adjusted twice because of problems with dizziness and tiredness. I get tired and out of breath just sweeping the floors. My blood is usually fine up until around four or five then it starts going up again. It was 139/102 at 4:09pm, I was making dinner, nothing strenous. I do have a history of hyperparathryoidism.(high calcium), but that has supposedly been corected.

Answers:
Beta blockers (like Lopressor) commonly cause people to feel tired and can precipitate shortness of breath.

It sounds like you are very focused on your B/P which in some respects is great but you can over kill it too. Sometimes just stepping back and relaxing a little can be useful. If you are healthy enough, adding vigorous physical exercise like swimming laps or playing tennis can be helpful in reducing you blood pressure.

Unless you have some dangerous condition, like an aneurysm, then taking a few months to get the B/P under control is okay. Most people require two and often three medications to adequately treat the condition. You are probably saying "Three medicines?" Taking modest doses of two or three medicines can often produce great results with no side effects. ACE inhibitors (or ARB's are a newer generation but are more expensive), diuretics (HCTZ) and B-blocker or Calcium Channel Blockers as a third adjunct.these choices can be influenced, however, by other conditions that you are at risk for that might benefit from these medications too.

Continue to work with your medical provider and you will achieve your goal.good luck.

Other Answers:
Everyone has a daily body rhythm (circadian rhythm), and blood pressure usually spikes first thing in the morning and also in the afternoon. Also the exercise will cause BP to increase.

You might want to talk to your pharmacist. It sounds like the lopressor is wearing off in the afternoon and maybe you need an extended-release drug that will stay in your system the whole day. I don't think your hyperparathyroidism would affect your BP (hyperTHYroidism yes, but not hyperparathyroidism).

You might also want to ask your doctor about changing the class of your blood pressure medication. Drugs like Lopressor are associated with tiredness, depression, and sometimes sexual dysfunction. My favorite BP drugs are called ARBs because they also protect the kidneys. Also Norvasc is good and powerful if you have very high BP.

it sound like it could be a mixed problem, tiredness makes me think it could be related to something other than high B.P. have u checked your hemoglobin or have u had an echocardiogram if not ask your doctor to order one. echocardiogram measures your hearts ability to pump blood and any abnormalities within the chambers.
