Other Answers:
There is no sure way. Deppression is a very serious disease and should not be taken lightly. Contact a medical facility immediately.

Get healthy, and if that doesn't work try some sort of deep feeling therapy.

I like lil kiss's answer.

Excersise produces endorphins (a natural high). Depression can be caused by the lack of sleep ( a reason why babies cry) and a lack of the right foods. Some types of depression are caused by hormonal problems and you will still need drugs to treat that type of depression.

Outpatient therapy.there are also resources called PHP's- meaning partial hospitalization programs.one step below inpatient. All depends on your current level of functioning.in other words, how much is it impacting your daily living? Dont rule out talking with a doctor.there are many different antidepressants out there.there are also some natural suppliments.I would start with therapy..get a good LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and go from there.good luck! Remember, depression is a treatable thing.and.this too shall pass.

Go see a counsellor. You need to talk to someone to get to the root and causes of your depression. Drugs treat the symptoms but not the cause. Try to stay away from meds if you really can.
Try holistic approach to it, get accupressure done, realign yourself.
Counselling will really help raise your self esteem which is half the battle.
Eat well. Food surprisingly has a big effect on our moods.
Junk food will leave you feeling sluggish, tired and depressed. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables and drink water, you know the story there.
I find when I feel really down, like having suicidal thoughts and things - i go for a really fast walk, or sometimes i run. Funnily enough, it makes me feel good. Scientifically ive been told its because feel good hormones (endorphins) are released when exercising.
Find good friends you can talk to. Try to laugh as much as you can. Rent comedy films.
I really hope you feel better soon.

I would get out and aboutmore . go to places where the surroundings are peaceful and maybe take a friend along that you can discuss you inner feelings with . one that you can really count on. You might want to go buy your self something that you have been putting off. anything just get out of bed and out and about. God will be with you . Just ask him to help you get through this crisis. God Bless.

Diet and exercise can help quite a bit for someone who just occasionally gets "the blues". But, sometimes even that isn't enough.

Still, if you are placed on medication, focus on a good diet and regular exercise will improve your ability to respond satisfactorally to the meds.

Counseling/psychology can help. Also regular exercise helps. It depends on the type and severity of depression as well. Some research suggests that MRIs affect people who have bipolar disorder (manic depression), but it won't affect other types of depression. If there's a known cause for the depression, perhaps the death of a loved one, it's important to deal with the issue. Grieving is necessary, but it's important to eventually look at the positive side. You've had X amount of time to spend with that person and know them and enjoy life with them. Regardless of what you feel, it will never change the past. The future will also deal with itself. The only thing you can really change is your current outlook. Maybe you're crushed that you got a pink slip at your job a few weeks back. But when else would you possibly get the chance to change jobs or careers like this? Everything can be a catalyst for good, but you have to change how you view things from loss to potential.

Seeking medical treatment is advisable. State any concerns about antidepressants with the doctor, and work together to develop a personalized treatment. Treatment will probably be most effective if you use multiple ways to treat depression, such as exercise, counseling, improving social ties with friends and family, and perhaps drug therapy.

I would agree with a lot of these answers. I think that exercise is a great way to go about depression. Group counseling and psychotherapy can also be helpful. You should also take a look at factors that you can contol which may be contributing to your depression. Is money making you depressed? You can create budget to resolve that. Is a significant other depressesing you? Dump him/her and find another. All I'm saying is that you need to identify factors that YOU can control.

There are many types of depression. It's very important that you see a psychologist that specializes in mood disorders and who can easily recognize general depression. By genereal depression, I mean, what kind and what level. If it's determined that your depression is situational, family, trusted friends, and perhaps an MFCC professional(marriage, family and child counselor,Masters level) would be an answer. Look at this. I can't get off the couch. I can hardly speak. I can't even force myself. I dread getting in the shower, and getting dressed. I can't have anyone around me. I can't convince the people who care about me the most, that they couldn't understand this. I feel it's my fault that they can't. I would rather have every bone in my body broken not to feel like this. Notice all the can'ts. It's can't, not won't. If you can't relate (and you can't unless you're suffering with this),it's O.K. The pain is that incredible, even more than physical. If the words above describe you, you can get help. A psychologist should refer you to psychiatrist for definitive diagnosis, and possible drug treatment. I, personally, would ask for testing. He'll know what you mean. ( there should be no stigma in seeing a psychiatrist. This is a disease. He's not likely to misdiagnose you, but ..Lastly, if you do end up on medication, sometimes one won't work, and another may. Our chemistry is different. I must tell you that these are personal opinions only, based on my own experiences.I am a counselor in a different field, but it would be illegal to offer this as medical advise,as one must possess a medical license to do so. The best of luck to you.
