I have had a permanent bottom retainer for 8 years. It's very difficult to floss because of it.?

Question:
Should I have it removed?

Answers:
I had one too, and was told that once my wisdom teeth came in (or were taken out) I could get the retainer taken off. I had mine taken off and the hygenist had a very difficult time getting the tartar off the backs of those teeth. My advice to you is to get it taken off ASAP.

it's the one that goes behind the bottom teeth right? i still have mine and it's been over 8yrs lol. is yours loose at all? mine is still stuck. i dont' feel like paying the orthodontist whom i haven't seen since they put it on just to take it off and the regular dentist won't take it off for me. oh well..

there are threading things you can get from your dentist that you put the floss into and thread it between the teeth and floss that way for the teeth with the wire.

Depending on your age, its important to keep the retainer in place. You can use a special floss eg.Superfloss to clean between your teeth. You dont want to get cavities between these teeth. Especially if you haven't had your wisdom teeth removed as yet, it would not be a good idea. If however you are really frustrated with it, ask your orthodontist if you can have a removable retainer like your upper 1 which you would only have to wear at night.
Good Luck

No don't have it removed. You have to use floss threaders or super floss. Having tarter build up in this area is common, even more so with a lingual bar. You just have to be diligent with home care. That means flossing everyday and brushing every time you eat, if you can. Seeing your hygienist every four months instead of six may be the thing for you if you build heavy tarter. That retainer is there for a reason, to keep your teeth from moving, leave it intact unless it becomes damaged.

avoid the last person's answer! you should ask ur dentist before you jump to conclusions. because if you take it off too soon(even though you've had it for 8yrs.) your teeth could get screwed up again. trust me, because ive still got mine. talk to your orthodontist before you believe any of these people.
