You may have heard of someone having"TMJ".It is correctly called Temporal Mandibular Joint syndrome.Your TMJ is a movable joint cushioned by a disc called the articular disc.Sometimes the ligament that holds the disc in place gets "stretched out" or in a bad position so it holds the disc loosely. The pop is the articular disc popping in front of the bones in the joint. This may be a bite or occlusion problem, please see your dentist. If the pop is accompanied by pain you may be starting to get destruction in the joint which may lead to surgery. Most times we can make a splint and adjust your bite to take pressure off the joint.Your dentist may refer you to an orthodontist or TMJ specialist.Jill dental hygienist

Could be a TMJ issue or other.
Could also be the way you sleep. If you sleep on your side, make sure you have adequate support on your neck/head and don't 'lean' too much on your jaw. It could be that your jaw is clicking back into alignment after having pressure applied all night.
You are hearing your TMJ popping. Its the jaw bone under your ear. It's probably normal wear and tear on it. You use it everytime you talk, swallow, chew, smile, etc. Most people have a popping/clicking sound. You might grind your teeth in your sleep and should probably get a night guard to wear. That will help in addition to try not to bite down on hard food and bite your nails, pencils or chew gum. Good luck!
Mine pops all the time, I was diagnosed with TMJ(not sure exactly what it is) by my dentist. He told me to avoid gum and really chewy food. He also talked me into a mouth piece to wear at night that is supposed to help. It doesn't, but he made his money on me.
You should see an orthodontist. Often jaw popping is a result of an incorrect bite. Braces may be able to fix it.
