If I drink from a coworker's Ice Mountain water bottle will I get sick?

Question:
I didn't actually put the water bottle up to my lips but kinda poured it in my mouth. It was left in the cubicle and I was thirsty! I took two little drinks. Am I gonna get sick?

Answers:
So many of these responses reveal a lack of understanding of germs and the germ theory. The idea that contact with microbe=sickness is not accurate. Like Louis Pasteur (father of the modern germ theory) said in his later years, "it's the soil, not the seeds." What this means is that a microbe cannot infect you unless your immune system has let its guard down. We live in a sea of viruses and bacteria. why are we all not ill all the time? Because we have immune systems that are made to deal with these things. Why can you and I have lunch with a mutual friend who is fighting the flu and, 12 hours later your feeling sick and I am not? Because my immune system was primed to deal with this invasion. If you want to keep your immune system primed for action, it's easy to do. There are three rules: eat well, move well and think well. If that sounds simple, it is.

if they have a cold or something contagious then its pretty likely that you will catch it even if you didnt touch the bottle

If the coworker is sick.

It depends if she back washed or not.

It depends if you actually caught the germs.

yes

Only if he peed in it.

if they have a sicknes you could

You should have thought of that before you took the drink. Bring your own from now on, DUH!

Yes, they had bird flu, run for your life!!

if he is sick and then you probably will..if he is not than you will not either. drinking through without touching lips is most common myth the bacteria is in the water and not on the edges of glass, cup or whatever. The bacteria goes into the waterwith we call backwash..so when we drink water certain amount of backwash goes back in..so if and you both drank water without touching lips then only there is chance you not get affected but it could still affect your teeth.

It depends if they are sick or not. It doesnt matter if you touched the lid or not with your lips, germs can get inside the water because the co-worker breathes air in that water. If a co-worker isn't sick, generally you aren't going to get sick, but if they have a viral disease, you are likely to catch their disease.

did you notice any backwash?? kidding, does she have any cold sores or us a stiff bristled toothbrush that would cause her gums to bleed?? consider it a form of the 10 second rule and don't worry about it, its more likely that you would suffer a psychosomatic illness rather than a legitimate cold or virus.

Well how silly is it when one says "if she back washes". WHAT!?

Hold up, No that girl is so wrong. I agree with the first girl who post. They do not have to back wash for you to get sick. That is just outrages. All someone has to do is place their lips on the bottle or cup that is only if the co worker, or even another person is sick with anything that can be spread to one another. All it takes is a little bit of germs to get you sick, remember that.

That is the truth. But if the coworker is healthy and not sick then you have no worries at all. So be careful who you drink after.

You definately could. There are things that your coworkers immune system reacts well to, that yours does not, and vice versa. If some of those germs were on the water-bottle you drank, and they got into your bloodstream, then yes, you very well may, but in all likely hood, you won't. Using someone's water bottle is usually does not transfer enough germs that make you sick. The water itself cleanses lots of the germs that may be harmful to you. Unless the person makes out with his water-bottle, lips gently against some plastic in the open air usually doesn't have too many bad germs. The air alone wipes out most that he would get on the bottle, but that doesn't mean all. It depends on what the person has going on inside them, but most times you won't get sick. This is not saying that you may not get extremely sick, however.

The only way to be sure that you can't get germs from sharing a water-bottle is abstaining from sharing a water-bottle, but if you must, you should wipe it off with a clean napkin or shirt.

Here's the last thing, though, backwash. There will be some saliva in the actual water that you couldn't possibly wipe away. The saliva will go directly into your stomach and onto your blood-stream. Pending how cleanly the person is while drinking, there could be some very bad stuff in the actual water. Germs strong enough to stay alive in saliva will not be killed in water. Sharing a bottle usually won't make you sick, but drinking lots of backwash certainly can.

My advice is avoid this as much as you can.

If they were not sick then I wouldn't worry about it, and if they were you could get some of that airborne stuff they sell at drugstores. It help prevent you from getting sick.

Best not to do that, you never know
