What can I do for acid reflux besides taking Protonix. It really burns at night.?

I used to get stomach ulcers and acid reflux and gastritis all the time, back when I was in college. I had x-rays taken of my stomach and remember laying on my bed in teh fetal position more often than not. I was 18 at the time, in the best shape of my life (aside from the digestive problems) but the pain killed me.

I took malox and was on nexium (or what ever the fad pill of the day was) and they helped me get on with life. But they never addressed the reason/cause of why I was getting the problems, so they all kept coming back. It didn't matter what I ate, even the bland diet I tried didn't help. Antibiotics did nothing. I drank WATER like a fish, still nothing.

Long story short, my friend turned me onto Chiropractic and after a year or so of care, I have never had another episode in my life. I'm thirty now. During the course of the year of care, I slowly weened myself off of all medication, prescription and over the counter alike.

In the meantime, go to your local health food store and buy a bottle of liquid Aloe Vera. Take about a shot a day. I used to but it in one liter bottles and fill the cap, mix it with water (NOT JUICE) and drink it. It will help soothe your throat and stomach and begin aiding your body in HEALING what damage has occured in those areas due to the stomach acid.

Your body heals itself everyday, if you doubt it, give yourself a paper cut and watch what happens over the next couple of weeks. But for it to do so, you need to give it proper time and "motivation."

A piece of advice I heard from several doctors is to not eat anything after 3 hours before bed time. It apparently helps reduce the amount of stomach acid.

Researchers have developed a radiation treatment to destroy some of the pores in your stomache that over secreet stomache acid. They do this with a triangulation system so none of your other organs are damaged.

Raise the head of your bed a few inches.

I have acid reflux. My doctor suggested not eating anything 4 hours before bed. Since I have other medical conditions, I have tried eating an apple or banana about an hour before bed and that stops my acid reflux from acting up while I sleep. I used to wake up with my sinuses, throat and stomache burning almost every monring until I implimented the one fruit 1 hour before bed rule. It also helps keep my weight in check too. Because an apple especially has anti-oxidents and natural fat burners. So my immune system stays up and my weight stays normal, especailly since I am in a wheelchair and can't walk or do most "normal" excersises.

Changing your lifestyle is the biggest way you can affect your GERD problem. Medications are only temporary - once you stop them if the triggers for it are still there, you will still have symptoms.

Several factors contribute to having increased acid in the stomach and decreased tone in the sphincter muscle that keeps the acid in the stomach and prevents it from "refluxing" up the esophagus.

Among these factors are:
1) Smoking - the nicotine decreases sphincter tone and increases acid production in addition to the other carcinogens in cigarette smoke leading to stomach cancer
2) Caffeine - coffee, tea, colas, etc all contain caffeine - this also loosens the sphincter tone and increases acid production in the stomach
3) Alcohol - it directly weakens the stomach's protective barrier as well as leads to increased acid production and weakens the sphincter tone
4) Eating big meals - stretching out the stomach will stretch the sphincter making it not as tight
5) Sleeping after meals - If you sleep right after you eat, gravity is no longer helping to keep that stuff down.
6) Taking NSAIDS (the Motrin/Advil/Aleve type of medications) or aspirin - this leads to a direct effect on the protective lining of the stomach

So to improve your GERD symptoms
1) Quit smoking
2) Decrease caffeine consumption
3) Decrease alcohol consumption
4) Decrease NSAID consumption
5) Eat smaller meals
6) Give 4 hours after eating a meal before you sleep
7) Sleep with multiple pillows keeping your body propped up

In certain cases you will need to be on medications as well.
If you have other medical conditions contributing towards this such as having a hiatal hernia, you may need further medical treatment before it improves.

Regardless, follow-up with your doctor and ask for further advice.

For one thing, try not to eat anything up to 4 hours before you go to bed, take your daily medication for acid reflux, and avoid greasy foods, high acidity foods such as orange juice and carbonated drinks, spicy foods, and try to take a TUMS when you feel isolated bouts of acid rising. drink plenty of water throughout the day and you should be fine

a tbl. of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and even taking a few spoon fuls of dill pickle juice.
I eat an orange once in a while which helps
also yogourt
this condition is caused by not enough acid in your digestive system so you have to put more in
